There was 2:06 left on the clock......I believe that McKelvin was told to run it out, carefully,to run the 6 seconds off the clock to get to the 2 minute warning. If he took a knee, the Pats would still have had 3 or 4 seconds left until the 2 min W.
What he should have done is catch the ball and run parellel in the end zone,to run-off the 6 seconds(no one is that smart, however).

He,also said he wasn't sure that he caught the ball in the field of play, but I think this is just an excuse.

I don't believe you can just run sideways in the endzone without the ref blowing the play dead. If you don't make an attempt to run forwards out of the endzone then I think they will call it a touchback.

nor will the clock start until the returner begins to run the ball forward. touchbacks don't run any time off the clock.

nope, clock starts, once he catches the ball........suppose he fumbled the ball in the end zone and the pats recovered?,,,,,,,,,Would no time elapse because all the action occured in the EZ?

oops......I think you're right........but,I still think Jauron thought it was important that McKelvin run the 6 seconds off the clock.

Re: McKelvin Wasn't Totally Dunb,Here's Why

I see your point but am not convinced!

Re: McKelvin Wasn't Totally Dunb,Here's Why

the dumb thing he did was try and fight for the extra yards when he was wrapped up if he had jsut gone down the odds are it's the 2 minute warning

Re: McKelvin Wasn't Totally Dunb,Here's Why

You do realize he probably could have just stood in the endzone and ran off 6 seconds and taken a knee before anyone actually got down to the endzone. Just for reference, in an earlier touchback by McKelvin where there was no urgency to run out the clock, it took 3 seconds off the clock and no Pats defender was close to get to the endzone.

Re: McKelvin Wasn't Totally Dunb,Here's Why

I think fans are obsessed with Monday Morning QBing why teams that dont use up clock should have and teams that use up clock shouldnt have.
Watch any close late game where the team runs on 3rd and 8 to chew up clock. If the other team scores, there will be a ton of people calling them stupid for not trying to convert the 1st. Then watch a team throw an incomplete pass trying to get the first down that could eat up the clock. If its incomplete, they were stupid to not run and burn clock.

Maybe its me, but I am under the impression that most coaches are more worried about putting players in a position to execute what they feel is the best thing to do, than figuring out what to avoid in case it fails.

Its playing to win, not playing to not lose. Fans are always quick to criticize the guy who wont play to not lose, but that strategy fails more often than it succeeds.
Personally, I think if you tell your team
Dont return it because you could fumble.
Dont pass because when its incomplete the clock stops.
Go down easy because you might fumble
You cause more damage than the fluky play does.

Isn't that what the Denver Broncos guy attempt to do when he ran for the last TD but still tried to shed time off the clock?

If yes, then he is indeed very very smart.

Funny, McKelvin took a knee in the end zone earlier in the game and 3 seconds was run off the clock. Sorry, but the rule is that once the returner touches the ball, the clock starts.

From what I saw, one patriot player tackled Mckelvin from behind held him up preventing him from going down to the ground, and another patriot player came in and ripped the ball out.

I'm with you on this one. I think it was okay that he ran it out ... playing on your heels isn't the best way to finish a game. A more experienced player would have gone down easier ... that's all.

McKelvin just plain f-ed up, but Jauron has a history of letting his players lose games (see Losman throwing an interception when they are deep in Dallas territory with a 5 point lead and less than two minutes left). Just too cute for his own good.

If that were us, I'd have wanted our guy to bring it out too. Not just the time issue, but he was very close to catching that thing in front of the goal line and when it's that close it can be hard for the player to tell When in doubt bring it out.

He bounced off Meriweather then try to start up again and Meriweather held him up then Woods and Meriweather stripped him is he had gone down on the first bounce he wouldn't have fumbled

Re: McKelvin Wasn't Totally Dunb,Here's Why

Funny, McKelvin took a knee in the end zone earlier in the game and 3 seconds was run off the clock. Sorry, but the rule is that once the returner touches the ball, the clock starts.

Incorrect. The rule is below. If you watch the replay, you can see that the referee called it correctly, waiting until McKelvin left the end zone to signal the winding of the clock. If 3 seconds were run off in a prior situation, it was a mistake. (Even if noticed, minor corrections like this are rarely made early in the game or if timing is not an issue.) The referee may not wind the clock until the runner demonstrates his intent to take the ball out of the end zone.

Article 2 The game clock operator shall start the clock (time in) after a free kick [note that the NFL rules define free kick to include kickoffs] when
the ball is legally touched in the field of play.
Note: Time is not in if:
a) the receiving team recovers in the end zone and makes no attempt to enter the field
of play (including running laterally in the end zone);
b) the kicking team recovers in the field of play (Referee’s timeout under change of pos -
session rule 4-3-7-S.N. 1); or
c) the receiving team signals for and makes a fair catch.

I think he made the right decision. I doubt that his reasons for taking the ball out were just an "excuse" because he did demonstrate an obvious ambivalence on the play.

Even Belichick understood the significance of those 6 seconds. He mentioned that one of his reasons for not opting for the onside kick was that they had three time outs and also "might" have had the 2:00 warning if they could get a touchback.

I thought it was the right decision to try to run the 6 second off. They were 6 huge seconds -- either they would have cost the patriots 40 seconds or an extra time out. I was actually rooting for McKelvin to take a knee, and once he came out, I knew that meant the best the Patriots could do was have about 1:40 with no time outs.
