On defense, BB has only one real choice...stop the run and make the rookie QB win the game. Stack the box to stop the run and force Sanchez to make quick decisions. Jones and Washington combined for 35 carries and 167 yards. Sanchez had only 18 completions, but averaged 15 yards/completions. I didn't see the Jets game but I can only guess that the RB success allowed alot of play action. Without Mayo, I'm concerned that the speedy RB duo will leave the OLBs vulnerable...and Keller may become a big factor if Sanchez is given time.
On offense, I see a similar game plan as last night. Max protection for Brady and short passes. Ryan will be ambushing Brady 24-7, so I expect alot Faulk draws and swing passes. The screen needs to be better executed than last night. If the Pats can withstand the early onslaught and use the Jets aggressiveness against them, Brady may get some some shots down the field. Jenkins is a beast in the middle. Harris is a stud at LB. BB may decide to test Gholston on the line. Again, I expect alot of draws.

I would love to hear opinions on the Jets from someone who actually saw their game 1.

Pats are going to stack the box, and let our DB's out-physical and outplay the Jets mediocre receiver corps. We're not covering TO and Lee Evans next game.

In order for us to beat the Jets, we're going to have to play fast and physical on both lines. I saw a physical nature from the defense last night that I abolutely loved, but only saw it in flashes from the OL. If we're going to beat them, we're going to have to match that intensity on both sides of the ball, starting with the OL and DL. They also have to open up holes like we saw in the first half for Maroney and Taylor. Brady can't be forced to throw 53 times again, especially against that defense.

Brady has to come back and play the way he did in the second half last night, which I think he will. We all saw his maturation last night and it looked like he shook off the rust as well as any hesitation he might have had about stepping into throws. I think if Brady plays the way he did in the 4th throughout the whole game, the Bills don't even come close to winning. On top of that, we're going to have to see more downfield shots to both Moss and Galloway if they are the least bit open. We can't have the Jets defense crowding the box constantly.

On defense, I was loving the way the secondary played last night. They punched the Bills receivers in the mouth and told them to come back and get some more when they were ready. I loved it. The secondary play reminded me of the '01 secondary whose specialty was to punch opposing receivers in the mouth. If they can shut down T.O. and Lee Evans, I have faith in them shutting down the likes of Jerricho Cotchery and Chansi Stuckey. However, even though Jackson only got 40 yards, the run defense looked porous at times. We have to jam the run and cannot let Thomas Jones and Leon Washington run free. This will be the key to the game. If we shut those two down, I have faith in our secondary to take care of the Jets' receivers. No running game means Sanchez will be forced to win the game and, while I think he will be good someday, I don't think he'll be good enough to beat us without a reliable running game. Also look for BB to throw in a few new formations and blitz packages to confuse the rookie. I also think the pass rush will be greatly improved if what we've heard about Mayo is true and he is able to play next week. He'll get a lot of the OL's attention and should be able to get penetration up the middle.

I have constant faith in our special teams and would love to see Maroney out there fielding kicks again.

Bottom line, if Brady does not come out there with the confidence and poise we saw out of him in the second half and we cannot stop the run, we're going to get our lunch handed to us. It will be a very long day. But Hell hath no fury like Belichick's scorn. I think we win a close one.

I watched a good portion of the game. Jet's game plan was simple. Defend well run the ball with an occasional pass.

The D looked dominating, I'm not so sure if it was Houston's line, Schaubs inability to react and read or if the Jets gameplan really was that good.

I thought there run game was overrated to be honest. a large majority of their yards on the ground came in the 4th quarter because Houston's defense was tired and couldn't sustain the constant pounding. I thought the Jets set up Sanchez well and he did what he had to do to win the game. He played better than well for a rookie.

One thing that really bothered me from last night, and I hope it was an abberation but on the 2nd 2 point conv., Brady threw on the run and that pass did not have power behind it (was intercepted).

Seeing it like that, I think Ryan will now gameplan to push Brady out of the pocket as much as he can.

Vs. the Texans, Ryan brought a lot of pressure up the middle- it was almost as if he were trying things out in advance for the Pats game and in doing that may have tipped his hand. He used Jenkins as his own personal Ray Lewis, and I think that will backfire in a physical game, because Jenkins will get gassed.

One reason I think we were playing plenty of vanilla D against Edwards was to not tip our hands for the next game.

To beat heavy pressure up the middle, I think we go with no huddle, perhaps 2 TE set for hot throws on blitz or 4 men rush (and more), but we do not go max shotgun protect, or prescribe excess blocking, because that just gives them a target to work with (e.g. the Steeler's fortress mentality "This is what we do, see if you can beat us"), and will just gas our OL which is what happened in the first half, especially the 1st quarter.

I see us going to 4-3 and bringing a lot of pressure to force quick decisions from Sanchez. I definitely will not be surprised to see Brace and Pryor in there.

Attack Lito Shepard. Aside from the fact Revis is a shutdown corner, Shepard looks old and slow, and has getting tourched in the pre season. If the Pats can protect Brady we can get some big plays.

On defense, watch the screen plays. The Jets ran quite a few against the Texans, and in the pre season. I am sure they are salivating the way the Bills killed us with it.

Start the game with a no huddle offense. To keep the Jets defense off balance. I say this because I heard Koppen speak on NFL Sirius this morning and he said he was going to look at tape of the Raven/Pat game in 2007.

I checked out the play by play log from that game and noticed we were most sucessful when we went no-huddle.

Check it out

There is no such thing as a shutdown corner when you have Rand Moss as your WR.:)

On defense the Pats will try to stop the run and make Sanchez through. Hopefully they will be more like the end of the game last night where they disguised some of their rushes and confused Edwards. Sanchez was able to do well against the Texans' rush, but their rush was pretty basic with not a lot of wrinkles.

On offense, they are going to have to use the Jets' agressiveness against them. I agree there will be a lot of short passing, but when they blitz and fail to get pressure Brady needs to carve them up alive down the field with one on one match ups. It will be interesting to see if the Jets line Revis up on Moss or Welker (they have lined him on Welker in the past). I think they may be better off putting him on Welker, but I don't know if that plays to Revis' strengths. I can see the shotgun RB draw working well against them too since when they blitz, it can open up lanes especially towards Gholston who got tied up a lot last week.

Getting up quickly on the Jets will be key. The Pats need to take Jones and Washington out of the game and ask the rookie to win the game for them. The Jets hid a lot of Sanchez's deficiencies last week because he was only asked to manage the game eventhough he passed 31 times. Ask him to throw 35-40 times when he isn't just trying to maintain a lead at this point could be a recipe for disaster.

surprisingly, they werent able to run early. they had a bunch of 3rd and 5 and longer situations, but sanchez was able to roll out of the pocket and make accurate passes downfield. later on in the game they were able to use to successful passing game to set up the run. Jones had a 39 and 38 yard run late in the game, so the rushing numbers were a bit jaded.

saw mostly leon washington early in the game, including at least 1 "seminole" formation inside the texans 10 where washington got to the 1.

How about some insights from a Jets fan?

The first post pretty much sets out the strategy in my opinion. Use screens and draws, and involve Welker early and often. Pick on Gholston. Try to get Moss lined up on someone other than Revis. Hit the TEs when the OLBs blitz. Honestly, I think the OC could do fine using Ravens tape to gameplan.

I think Faulk is the go-to RB this week for NE.

On defense, stop the run and make Sanchez pass. Get some pressure on Sanchez when possible. He looked good when pressure got close against Houston though. I see Leon Washington being more involved this week because running in the middle of the field will probably not be an option. I think the Jets will try to break out David Clowney this week. he's a speedster out of Virginia Tech. I think confusing Sanchez, if possible, is a good strategy as well. The Texans tried to apply pressure but when that didn't work, he picked them apart. If they show Mark things he hasn't seen before, his decision making will be slower and maybe he'll make some more mistakes. Maybe it's a given that they'll try this, I don't know.

Interesting Tweet by Peter King last night that I posted in the game thread:

Said King, "Each time the Bills send 5 or 6, they bother Brady. As press-box neighbor @albertbreer said, what do you think Rex Ryan will do Sunday?"

i really never buy this. BB is smart and the best but lets not overcredit him .. We were losing the game until the last 2 mins so his vanilla D wasnt supposed to give up 24 pts.

this will lot like the 2007 balt game. lot of holding and pushing down the field on the receivers. lot of 6-7-8 man blitzes from different angles.
if our o line pass protection is like last night then brady is going to have long day.

It only gave up 17.............O gave up 7.....

A quick tabulation shows them to be about 58-4 in the Brady era ( including '08) when they give 17 points or less, the losses being his first start in '01 vs NJY, Denver and Jets in '06 and SB vs Giants....
Giving 17 will usually get the job done..

.

Call me naive, but I think Ryan's hand has been tipped since day 1. He will bring constant pressure as if to say "here you go, now beat it". Some teams will....I think the Pats can. I realyl don't know how much Rex Ryan will hold back. I think his plan is pretty straight forward. Hit people, make people always think they're about to get hit, and just be better than the guy on the other team. It's a great system for the fans when it works........when it works.

Guys have me confused with this Revis vs. Moss matchup. With Brady at QB Moss has compiled 14 catches for 262 yards with 1 TD in TWO GAMES but it's Welker who's killed the Jets for scores. Moss has done his damage outside the 20's. I wouldn't exactly say Revis has "contained" Moss.

With Cassel at QB Moss's numbers are mdeiocre but Welkers are through the roof.

x2

For me, that was the defensive highlight of the night. Last year I always thought our secondary was a bit too effeminate. Now we've got some head smashers. The receivers should be terrified every time they catch the ball.

Now this is teh kind of post from a fan of another team that adds value to our site. Not that he is trying to butt kiss us, but shows that he's given good thought to the football aspects of the game this week.

Welcome to the board and keep posting good stuff.

If the Patriots cannot handle Scott , Harris, and Jenkins it could be a long day for TFB.

You're wrong about the running game setting up play action. It was quite the opposite actually, apart from a few decent gains out of the wildcat we done NOTHING on the ground until Jones broke a 38 yard TD run. He had two big runs (The TD and a 39 yarder) and that was it, both came late in the game. Sanchez carried the offense for most of the game, it was concerning actually, even though he did play great.

Revis was not the starting CB (even though he was the best CB on the team) in the first game of his career where Moss torched the Jets. Revis was on Moss for some of the second game and I remember Moss' only big gain coming on a pass over Kerry Rhodes where Rhodes was called for interference despite both players pushing. Revis has done a good job on him.

Personally I want to see us put Revis one on one with Welker. I'd have Lito cover Moss with Rhodes providing Safety help.
