I just read that the Pats will be wearing their 1963 uniiforms tonight. I had assumed wearing throwbacks meant an appearance by Pat Patriot but wasn't sure Pat was even around way back in 1963. I know they wore the old tricorn hat logo on their helmets originally but I don't go back quite that far and wasn't sure when Pat Patriot actually made his debut. I'm sure some on this forum must know and figured I'd throw it out there.

So when did the Pats switch logos from the old tricorn hat to the snarling Pat?

According to wiki... 1961.

Just look at the uniform designs they give, and Pat is on the helmet on 1961, and the season before is the other design.

Which wiki page is this? I can't find it.

The tri-corn helmet logo was only used in 1960.

The 61 uniform is slightly different than the one Grogan is wearing in your picture. The stripes on the shoulders of tonights uniform will be white in the center with blue on the outside. This changed in the early 80's to the uniform you show. I'll dig up a link in a few minutes.

Actually just look at JMT57's link and you will see the difference.

This site, though no longer updated, gives a good year-by-year picture of all teams' uniforms: Football Uniforms Past and Present

Wow, very interesting find!

Man, those late 90's uniforms had to have been the ugliest. There is something about the Elvis logo on the shoulder that makes me feel like it was an XFL or AFL uniform.

'61 is the same as the one grogan is wearing, only difference is the blue helmet stripe wasn't added until '65. Same jersey was worn '60-'69 and '84-'92, only difference is the blue stripe added in '65 and the multiple sock and pant stripe changes.

1970 they moved from the shoulder stripes to small horizontal stripes on the bottom of the sleeves

1975 they moved to larger horizontal stripes on the bottom of the sleeve.

1984 they went back to the classic shoulder stripes used until 1992.

That's just the jersey...the leg stripes have changed every few years even without a jersey design change.

Look closely at the shoulder stripes and you will see that the 61 jerseys are not the same as the 80's jersey worn by Grogan.

Damn, my eyes missed that...same layout though just reversed the blue and white stripes.

Exactly..... Also, Not entirely the same layout. In the 61 version, the stripe does not circle the entire arm like it did in the 80’s uniform. Below is a link showing the stripe starts from solid red and runs across the top of the shoulder (only). In the 80's version the stripe went all the way around the underarm. The 61 version is a classic NFL uniform and I love it!

Another subtle difference is the 61 version does not outline the white numbers in blue like the Grogan era uniform did. But that's enough of that. Enjoy the game!
