re: Seymour "I was blindsided" (merged)

The Big Overrated is using his family as an excuse for his delayed arrival in Oakland??
That's why the Raiders sent the Big Overrated a 5 day letter??
Try again Richard!!

Seymour 'I was blindsided'

Ian's Daily Blog - Ron Borges of the Boston Herald conducted an intereview this morning with recently traded defensive lineman Richard Seymour, and the veteran said in his interview that the team’s decision to ship him off to Oakland left him “blindsided” and struggling to get his personal matters in order. “First of all, I was blindsided by this whole [...]

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

Of course the trade was unexpected. Glad to see he's looking out for the kids. He's moved on. Good luck and good health in Oakland.

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

Perfectly understandable. Remember the Pats weren't considering trading him UNTIL Oakland made them an off that "they couldn't refuse". We were all blind sided, and logisically its been a nightmare for Richard. I think we've all been a little unrealistic to think that he'd be able to jump the next plane to Oakland and carry on as if nothing much happened. Its taken a week to get his sh!t together and now he'll carry on. I wish him well

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

Must be tough for Seymour. Richard actually sounds like a good guy, family man, has his head on straight... I'm pretty sure it's his agent who is the psycho. His agent is the same guy who represents Michael Crabtree, who is still holding out.

re: Seymour "I was blindsided" (merged)

Thanks for the memories Big Sey, hope you have some success in Oakland.

Next topic.

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

Nothing but respect for Richard, glad you took care of your family you did the right thing, now go play Monday night and do us a favor and knock the crap out of Phillip cry me a Rivers.

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

Best wishes Big Sey, I never thought you dogged it on those bad knees personally. Hope you stay healthy.

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

I thought I read at the beginning of this that RS told someone he had a feeling he was on his way out?

re: Seymour "I was blindsided" (merged)

So he had never faced up to the fact that part of the cost of getting all that money is separation from his family?

A. Nobody said he's a genius
B. If his wife went all irrational, it could be a smart move to back her up for a bit, until it became obvious even to her he had no choice but to report to Oakland ;)

B, while unsupported by anything like solid facts, isn't a totally crazy guess, given that Mrs. Seymour has something of a history of excited behavior.

He told Warren that last season, but perceptions can change over time. Maybe he thought that w/ the uncapped year, he'd be signable. Maybe the Pats expressed an intention to negotiate with him on a new contract. Maybe he just wasn't expecting to be gone until after the season... who knows?

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

All he had to do was issue a statement shortly after the trade happened, explaining he had to get some personal business done before going west. No doubt he felt shocked and no doubt he had some heavy family issues to deal with. But the skeptic in me believes he was exhausting all options before finally deciding to report.

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

I'm in with the good luck to Big Sey Club. He helped us win 3 championships. He made 5 Pro Bowls. He wanted to get paid for his efforts. This is America isn't it? Perform well and expect to be compensated for it. I hope he leaves Oakland after one year so that they go 1-15 in 2010 and we get the 1st pick.

I remember the Richard Seymour vs David Terrell debate on draft in 01. Those of us who wanted Seymour were ridiculed because he was only the 3rd best DL in that draft behind Justin Smith and Gerard Warren. While Terrell would team up with Brady(former college teammate and go on to great career).

I think Seymour thought he could pout about the trade and somehow get out of it. He's used to whining and getting his way. Then when he saw how things were falling and that he had no recourse, he used the "personal business" as an excuse. Pure and simple.

Re: Seymour 'I was blindsided'

i especially liked his statement that he was looking forward to the Monday game and that "I'll be the guy on top of the quarterback." That's the Richard Seymour I'm going to miss.

Now that the circus is over, good luck to you, Richard. Play well and be healthy!

none of us can know that, of course, unless we were speaking to him regularly over these past few days.

i'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt to a guy who gave so much to the Pats and to accept that he was thrown for a loop by the whole matter and needed a few days to adjust.

other than rumor, as far as I know these are his first public statements since the trade. his words here are perfectly reasonable and appropriate. any other reading of them or fantasy about what he "really" felt is our projection.

Of course it's my projection. I never presented it as anything else. But if Seymour merely needed a few days to adjust and sort out his family stuff, all he had to do was communicate that to the Raiders.
