Some interesting 2009 Pats defensive preseason stats

How did the young Pats defense do this preseason? Yeah it's preseason--it's clear the secondary is a work in progress, but it's nice to see the high sack totals.

Pats ranked 5th in the league this preseason with 12 sacks. The Jets were the best in the league with 19 sacks.

Pats were far and away the worst passing defense in the NFL at no. 32 giving up an astonishing 275 yds per game. The teams we expect in the top 5 were for the most part there: Ravens, Vikings, Steelers.

The Pats were the worst defense statistically in the NFL this preseason, giving up 406 yds a game. The Raiders were closest with 386 yds given up. Vikings and Ravens were no. 1 and no. 2

Not to be an apolgist for the D - especially since I don't think they're very good - it's also worth noting that Belichick, more than most, focuses on process over results, 'though he'd like to compete and win the games, as well. It's not black and white, though. And his gameplans tend toward the vanilla more than most. And, well, the D's not all that good, and even where it might be good/better, it's still not terribly experienced.

Hehe, it's funny you said that because if it weren't for BJGE fumbling late against Cincy, the Pats would be 4-0 this preseason. The Pats have been in some amazingly entertaining preseason games this year. Despite giving up over 400 yds a game, BB still worked his magic to almost go undefeated--talk about genius!

But all kidding aside, preseason means nothing in the grand scheme of things. I just think it's a bit disappointing that the pass defense is far and away the worst in this one month stretch. Granted the games don't count, but still, I would have loved to see a bit of resistance.

Oh please. What makes you believe the defense isn't that good? Some preseason stats? This the same unit we had last year, except as far as I can tell, we've upgraded every position except OLB. And for all the whining about how "bad" our D was last year, they were ranked 10th in the league--including 11th against the pass. We have way too many spoiled fans on this board.

I see lots of great defensive draftees,keepers at DL, LB and secondary. I still fail to see a single rookie starter slotted in on Defense.

The comment about lack of vast experience would be true, the comment about lack of experience is not. This Defense is going to be "terribly" tremendous.

The only thing that matters, and it's the preseason mind you... VANILLA EVERYTHING where wins aren't the object it's only player evaluation!!!!

When you consider that the backups and scrubs account for a very large percentage of the playing time in pre-season, it's pointless to look at rankings. Why hold the poor defensive performances of units made up largely of guys that aren't even on team against the actual 2009 Patriots defense? It makes no sense to me.

Eh, just wait until the regular season to make judgments on the defensive schemes. We were using some big time vanilla defenses out there this preseason.

The only thing that is really interesting about preseason stats is how completely irrelevant they really are. How many of those sacks were made by the first team vs. back up defenses? How many yards were given up by the first team vs. the back ups? The starters didn't even play in the final game. Shouldn't we just throw those stats out the window?

Exactly. Off the top of my head, I can think of two plays that jump out as irrelevant that skewed our defensive stats:

- The long bomb over the head of Love for a TD. He's not on the team.

- Wheatley getting burned for a TD over the top. He's at best 4th on the CB depth chart and likely won't be left one on one like that very often when he plays.

Preseason is the pre-race stretching, regular season is the first 25.2 miles, playoffs are the last mile sprint.

The one thing I would worry concerning pre-season is who does dominate the one on one matchups on the line.

We did pretty well there.

However, if Jamar Love gets re-signed, a re-evaluation might be required.
