Was watching an interview with him today on Patriots.com, and he said that, according to his agent, the Pats had been trying to sign him for a year. Simmons admitted surprise when the Pats showed interest in him, saying that he knew the O line was established and had been together for a while.

So, with Kaczur being extended, and with the Pats landing Simmons after a year of pursuit, what's the plan for him?

Excellent question. I don't know. Insurance for Neal I guess.

He is a real talented guy, which is probably a big part of it. He does have diabetes, so that has to be managed, but he was a first round pick for a reason and started for a good Steelers team.

I imagine him coming off injury and not having a camp they will give him some time to get in football condition and learn the system. After that, I imagine they will play the best players.

Depth?

They signed him for 3 years I believe, so Belichick likes what he "thinks" he sees.

His salary amounts are backup money, so that's a sensible plan, I suppose. Perhaps a very good one if he's still got it.

can he play center too???

Yes. I'm not sure if he has played center in any games but I recently read an interview where he said he was the backup center during camps and practices. Sorry no link.

Let me try to find the story and I'll post a link.

No, but BB said they'd try him at T.

either way regardless of position until Vollmer gets experience he is the best back up we have though he prolly needs some time to get experience in our system.

The talk about trying Simmons at T confirms what I sense: Matt Light may start his broadcasting career sooner than he thinks. Am I the only who thinks he, even more than Kaczur, is the weak link in the O-line?

Probably not, but then I disagree with that assessment. Koppen is the weakest link amongst starters based on the 2008 data.

Regarding Simmons and his diabetes. Since the Patriots have a nutritionist on staff, I believe, and that they provide meals for the players on days they practice, you can bet that the Pats will be doing whatever they can to help him with his diabetes.

As far as Light goes...I think he's good just incredibly overvalued at this point.

It almost reminds me of Bledsoe's situation. When he came in, he was more or less quick enough to play at a high level.

Then everybody else got faster in a hurry.

Light was very good when he came in, had SOME problems with speed rushers.

Then everybody else got quicker in a hurry (relatively), especially as he gets older.

He's slowly but surely becoming a liability.
