When does Goodell step in on Seymour trade

I would suspect that Al would simply argue that he didn't want to jeopardize any possible long term relationship with Seymour by sending him the nasty letter!

It's not costing Al anything while Seymour stays away correct?

Someone mentioned that Schefter "tweeted" he would get his weekly game checks being on the active roster. Now, who knows how accurate that is.

Another thing is that Al Davis is one stubborn and strong willed dude. He may not even think about trying to rescind the trade to save face, and instead make Seymours life hell.

First Goodell should not "step in" and do anything official. I would be shocked if he did. The process is already in place.

I understand what may be going on with Seymour. First he was pissed. Then he want some sort of concession from Oakland. He either wants a long term deal with lots of $ or he wants a non-franchise after this year agreement. The only thing he can do is not show up if this is what he wants.

Now if Oakland sends him the letter, that changes the situation for Seymour. Then he has to decide to show up or lose his FA status next year.

In any event he is now Oakland's problem now. The only way that the deal gets reversed is if he fails a physical. I don't think that is likely.

I do wish Richard the best of luck, except when he plays againts the Patriots. I hope that he gets lots and lots of Al Davis' $ and put them in cap hell for many years to come.

That would be a good thing. As far as I can tell, the league office has already said that it is a valid trade pending a physical.

I know Patriot fans want to talk them into this being all on the Raiders now. But even when reading the above, "Pending" is just like a "Yeah But". It's that little part that means it really isn't finalized. What is really being said is there are 10 parts to a process and everything up to part 9 is complete and those parts are finalized, but you have to have all 10 parts or the other 9 mean nada.

If he actually never does report, my guess is the Comish will tell the Pats to work a deal with another team, like the TO deal. Everyone comes out a bit of a loser between the Raiders/Pats instead of one side getting completely robbed. The team that ends up with Seymuor is the one that gets the deal in all of this. So in this case the real winner isn't even identified yet.

So, if he is on the Raiders gameday roster as of now, and he receives a paycheck, is that the same as taking the physical for this deal to go through?

Wrong. Just reported that the Raiders have already delivered the 5 day letter to him. Seymour's their property and is subject to what they decide to do to him. The Pats have the pick and are out of the picture.

Well, I guess the Raiders just sent him the 5 day letter.

Update on the Richard Seymour situation

Update at 3:35pm

CSNbayarea.com spoke moments ago to Chronicle Live Host and voice of the Oakland Raiders, Greg Papa, to get the latest news on Seymour's status.

Papa said the Raiders' position, simply put is: they want the player.

Papa also said the Raiders have sent a letter to Seymour saying he had five days upon receipt to report to the Raiders and take a physical.

Failure to do so could result in Seymour being placed on the Raiders' roster/suspended. This would mean the Raiders could keep him on the roster/suspended for this season and then retain his rights in 2010 for his 2009 salary.

When the Raiders sent the letter is not precisely known, however.

Jake Plummer against Tampa Bay.

It already set prescident.

Virtually unrelated due to Plummer's retirement. IIRC, Plummer was retired before the trade (or at least had announced it).

Well ok. If it plays out where he never reports and the Raiders are out the pick, the NFL just jumped the shark with me. They'd probably get some type of compensetory pick.

I just don't get how it's final without showing and taking a physcial, hello new loop-hole. The only fault I see on Davis on this one, is still wanting him to come. Why would you want someone that doesn't want you?

Because Al was nuts before he became senile. Now, he's both. If you want proof, go to profootballtalk.com and read the latest.

The letter does indicate, though, that Oakland is not interested in trying to get their first-round pick back. They want Seymour. Mr. Florio also points out there is speculation among league insiders that the Raiders didn't include language in the trade documents that would have scuttled the deal if Seymour didn't report.

Perhaps that's why the Patriots are so confident that the issue "is between [Seymour] and Oakland."

Owned. Again...

Probably because Al is in denial, where he's resided ever since the Tuck Rule was enforced on a snowy field in Foxboro, and can't fathom that an elite player would not want to play for his illustrious Black and Silver who were in the SB just 6 seasons ago...

For some reason he's never held that against Bill. But Richard best be careful because Al is nothing if not vengeful and Lombardi says he plans to outlive everyone who has ever crossed him...

Tick tock...

Well OK then, the pick is ours and good bye Richard, thanks for the memories, you were oh so dominant back in the day.

During the early part of this decade, nobody was better.

I love the pick though because I do not feel he would have been as great as was back then playing for anyone. Good player, yes, just not great as he once was.

So, we get a number one pick, get the best years out of him and end up with another number 1, probably around the same position RS was originally drafted in - is this not a great move, even if we have ti wait 2 years for it??

But that's the equivalent of giving players free reign to veto any trade. Why would the league office want that?

To answer the question in the title of this thread, my guess is that Goodell would step in if the Raiders actually attempted to void the deal and it became a dispute between two teams. Right now it's just a Raiders player who has failed to report, what's to step in on?
