Gasper: Team Captains Named

Wilfork is a captain despite wanting a new deal. Those disloyal bastard Patriots! :p

Patriots confirm captains - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

The Patriots have confirmed that they have named their captains for the 2009 season.

Offense: quarterback Tom Brady and wide receiver Randy Moss.
Defense: linebacker Jerod Mayo and nose tackle Vince Wilfork
Special teams: Sam Aiken.

Brady, Mayo and Aiken were all preseason captains. Moss is a captain for the second straight season.

It is interesting that Wilfork, who boycotted the team's voluntary organized team activities in the spring as he tried to angle for a long-term extension but has participated in all mandatory activities despite not having a new deal, was named a captain for the second straight year.

Aiken replaced Larry Izzo, who is now with the Jets, as special teams captain. Izzo was special teams captain for the past eight seasons.

The Patriots captains last year were Brady, Moss, left tackle Matt Light, Wilfork, safety Rodney Harrison, and linebackers Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel and Izzo.

Mayo a Captain already?? Happy for Mayo. He would retire a PAT..

What about Sanders? Still think he is average though.

Re: Patriot's captains...per Reiss

That's a lot of size walking out onto that field for the coin toss. Holy crap.

Mayo as a captain is great. Hopefully he assumes the leadership role that was left void when Bruschi, Rodney, Vrabel, etc. all departed.

Re: Gasper: Team Captains Named

Izzo wasn't with us last year.

Re: Gasper: Team Captains Named

Interesting that we cut down from 8 captains to 5. I would have liked to see Adalius Thomas a captain as well.

Re: Gasper: Team Captains Named

Interesting that all four defensive captains are gone.

It makes sense to have fewer than eight or nine captains as well. Devalues the role. A max of two per group - offense/defense/ST - is sensible.

Nice changeup from people forgetting Aiken was here last year.

It seemed a little light, I was hoping to the the Hit Stick as a captain - there's no-one in the secondary so hopefully he'll be a pseudo captain.

I thought of Hit Stick too. Hopefully next year (though not if it means Wilfork is gone).

Re: Gasper: Team Captains Named

Yes he was.

That's crazy. I can't believe I thought we lost him before the 08 season....hmm...We really have made a lot of changes.

No surprises as far as the players selected. I thought that Adalius Thomas would be a Captain as well. Seems as though BM wasn't quite ready.
