RYAN WON'T PLAY PATRIOT GAMES WITH O'CONNELL - NFL News - FOX Sports on MSN

Yeah,At least he admits he will pump Kevin for anything he knows but the fact that they picked him up because they think they got a good Quarterback is just pure BS - They had chances to pick up a QB long before O'Connell got the hook and don't tell me there was not a decent backup QB in the bunch until Kevin was available,I ain't buying it.

I can almost guarantee you that Kevin will be cut as soon as the week 2 game ends after the Jets get pounded and anything Kevin can add to figure out the offense will be null and void as will his 2 week career as a Jet.

Do we know what the compensation was?

Do we know what the compensation was?

The Jets nor the Lions have disclosed the deal but I would think that I would not be far off in guessing the Jets sent Detroit a 6th or 7th rounder in 2010 - That is what you could expect with a QB 3 deep in rotation in their offense

But O'Connell clearly isn't worth that or our top-notch, best-in-the-league, front office would have gotten at least the same as compensation instead of cutting him.

Rex Ryan makes Eric Mangini seem like a cool dude. No?

I really wish we could go deep inside the head of Belichick to wonder why he did not hold onto Kevin a week longer and get a little compensation for Kevin, but I think we gave up long ago trying to figure out how Belichick thinks up deep in his cranium.

He doesn't want O'Connell to be an assistant coach...because O'Connell cold probably out coach him any day of the week

Detroit, Denver, Cleavland, and the Jets put in waiver claims for KOC.

I can see why the Jets would want to pump his brain,, just seems like there is more to it.

Pats are good at developing QBs, KOC was a 3rd round pick, does KOC really suck that bad that the Pats gave up on him so early?

I think the Jets grabbed him to pump his brain and for trade bait For Denver. I would not be surprised to see the Jets cut KOC in the next month.

This make so little sense. So, we are to believe that one of Belichick's office flunkies called all 31 teams in the couple of day's before the cut and no one was willing to give a 2011 7th for O'Connell?

It is either that or believe that the team just didn't bother. Thsi makes no sense since the patriots clearly were making such deal in the past two weeks.

I would hope such details could have been brought to Belichick after a potential offer was on the table. I don't think this should have taken much of Belichick's time.

Several years ago Belichick signed a former Bills WR just before their game with Buffalo then dumped him shortly afterwards..anyone remember his name?

You could say the same with Vrabel's situation,I would think the Patriots could have received a 2nd round pick just for Cassel and then held off a few days to get another 3rd or 4th for Vrabel but he didn't waste time and did the 2 for 1 deal with KC which still irritates me a little,I still think this was a little favor to his old buddy Pioli but some here think thats nuts. - Vrabel to me was worth another draft pick and from what I have seen from Mike in preseason as a Chief,he still has IT. - Pioli got a steal, but then again from Cassel and his leg which no one knows is anywhere near 100% we shall see if Scott got as good a deal as I think he did.

BB would have known something along the lines of competitors wanting KOC to "pick his brain". If he made that move well knowing what the repercussions would be, something tells me I shouldn't be worried about anyone scheming through KOC for the Pats.

Ike something.

Or Jonathan Smith?

I think Belichick is pictured as cold and heartless and a business-only type of guy. I don't believe it for a minute. He has friends in the game, including players and coaches on many teams. He does them favors. They do him favors. He also has his enemies (one is NOT Mangini).

I think Vrabel was GIVEN to pioli as a favor to both pioli and vrabel. After all, this was a way to guarantee Vrabel his 2009 salary and his bonus. The alternative was to cut him and get a 5th or 6th the next week.

There have been many players he has cut early so that they would have time to catch on elsewhere. There are others who he cuts at the very last chance he has.

My guess with regard to O'Connell is that he pi$$ed off the coach with his performance or attitude that Belichick simply had someone get rid of him immediately. This is just like the old days where a kicker or player was cut after the game after screwing up. When that happens, folks pay attention.

The BOTTOM LINE is that Belichick uses and trades draft choices as well as any one in the league. But I don't think that he always tries to optimize and get the best deal.

And yes, I can imagine a comment made Seymour resulting in a call to Al asking if he still was interested in Seymour.

It was Smith back in 2006...oddly google comes up with a link to here about a similar accusation levied by Mike Felger about BB regarding Smith.
http://www.patsfans.com/new-england...-starts-conspiracy-theory-jonathan-smith.html

Then again Smith was also re-signed after that first Buffalo game and went on to play in two games for the team and was re-signed after the season before getting cut in training camp in 2007 so he must have shown something beyond his playbook knowledge to the Patriots to be brought back twice.

I really don't think Vrabel was going to be cut down the road this offseason and I think Mike is worth more than a 5th or 6th in trade,He still has gas in the tank - he is not the pass rushing threat he was years ago but I saw him in preseason making tackles all over the field while the younger guys were 10 yards back,Mike still has some speed, just not good at getting past the tackles anymore which was definately a reason why he was sent to KC of couse Pioli there helped make the trade faster than I would have liked to see.

Maybe it was Mikes salary or something else,I don't know, all I know is of the group of Harrison,Bruschi and Vrabel I think Vrabel would have still made the roster - Harrison and Bruschi were almost guaranteed to get cut had they not retired before the 53.

No, Vrabel wasn't being cut later in the preseason. He has being cut before March 1st when his bonus was due. Belichick determined that Mike wasn't worth his salary and bonus for the kind of production that belichick anticiapted from him. Most everyone here would have preferred that Belichick had not made his decision and that he was starting instead of Woods.

The alternative explanation is that pioli wanted vrabel badly enough to insist on him as part of the deal. If this is the case, then we got significantly less than a 2nd for Cassel (perhaps a 3rd for Cassel and a move to a second for including vrabel).
