PFT: If Seymour doesn't report, Raiders will want their pick back

Ok Seymour needs to stop acting like a duche now and report to Oakland

If it's a business and he doesn't want to report to the new site, why should he do it just because others want him to?

After all, it's a business.

Come on guys, this is just more Florio speculation and it needs to be limited to existing threads because his opinion doesn't warrant it's own threads. If the league or Oakland or NE or Seymour or his agent has something to add that would warrant a new thread. Otherwise it's just more musing...

C'mon Richard, you always treated it like a business, never gave the Pats a discount, even told people it was your last year. You cant be heart broken now that your as a Pat is really over..can you?

Agreed. I'd feel worse for him if he took all types of discounts to play here. He's not been shy about the business aspect of the sport when it works in his favor (holding out), but now he's being a baby when the business aspect bites him?

Exactly. He can choose to retire from the NFL. It's his choice and his right.

I got to think Seymour is bluffing. If he is really all about the money, is he really willing to be unemployed for an entire season and then not be eligible for free agency. I don't think he is that much of an idiot.

i think the image for oak takes a huge hit if they really do that. will set a precedent for any other players .i bet seymour is not intending to sit out the season.
its eugene parker playing all these games

If they can undo the trade, we get the player back. Personally I like the trade and hope it does through - if not Seymour is back on the DL and that's fine with me too.

I don't think Seymour will be back in the DL. If I understand the rules correctly, they're going to force Seymour to show. If he doesn't, then he is forced to sit out the season entirely.

Seymour has to play this year if he wants to be a FA. So he has to either eventually report to Oakland (in which case we get a 2011 1st round pick) or something will have to force the trade being voided, in which case he should be motivated to play for us and "prove us wrong" in trading him. Either way is ok. I think the trade will go through, but I'm ok with a pissed and motivated Seymour back on the Pats.

The chances of that happening are zero.

The NFL Offices would never allow that. It would be suicide for the league to set that precedent of a player vetoing a trade and choosing his team while he is under his current contract.

That would turn it into the fiasco (competition-wise) known as Major League Baseball.

Exactly. He can choose to retire from the NFL. It's his choice and his right.

Actually, he can just not show up. The Raiders will void the deal rather than putting him on the NFI list, and he'll revert back to the Patriots.

No need to retire.

Good point..

Patriots don't have to take him back.

They won't (unless he signs a very Patriot-friendly new contract).

This is the NFL, not MLB where the inmates are in charge of the asylum.

The league can't have the precedent set. Once again, it would be an outbreak of Selig-Steinbrenner-itis.

The NFL is a different business than Major League Baseball.

The Green Bay market can compete with the NY Giants market in the NFL.

Goodell knows that and watches with bemused horror at the competitive imbalance of baseball.

I believe only the league office can void the deal.

I wonder what the NFL's position on this is going to be. There's no way they can let Seymour dictate the trade terms. That would open a Pandora's Box of rebellion amongst the players. Don't like a trade? Just pout and don't go.

If the terms of the trade are valid, then the Pats will have just cause to say, as was pointed out, getting Seymour to Oakland is their problem. It's not the Pats' responsibility to hold his hand, put him on a plane, and then force him into a Raiders uni.

The key is the wording of NFL contracts, which stipulate that a player must pass a physical. Usually, the inference is that they pass it (and the trade is final) or they fail it (and the trade is nullified). As for a player REFUSING to take a physical? I don't know what they'd do.

If they allow the Pats to keep the pick, and Oakland gets screwed, then the NFL will have to deal with teams clamoring for new rules about trades which safeguard their side of the deal, which is almost as bad as having the players revolt and dictate trade terms.

Up until now, the NFL has been relying on the players to cool down, compose themselves, and ultimately go for the millions. If this drags out, it could get ugly.

What happens right now if, say, a trade is made but the player decides to retire? Does the team trading the player lose the pick they got? I suppose Seymour could screw the Pats by retiring, and then they're out both Seymour and the pick, but then Seymour's also out of a lucrative career.

The next step would be for the Pats to give him the 5 day letter and he could miss the season. Sitting out a year at his age is only going to hurt him in the long run

He'd be cutting off his nose to spite his face.
