Cap Space

This is the first time all season the Pats have been in a reasonable position from a cap perspective. IMO the FO has been more willing to make moves quickly to help get the cap back in shape. All of the major moves have freed up cap space (Cassell/Vrabel, Hobbs, Seymour), even Bruschi's retirement has helped.

The FO did a very good job with very little cap space. Nice job anonymous FO staffers!

Wilfork can be franchised if necessary, Mankins will be an RFA if a new CBA is not reached (When do we find out whether 2010 will be uncapped?). Ghost may end up leaving but most of the core players are still under club control.

Thank you, seems like a long time until we find out if next year is capped or not, I thought there was a November deadline.. I could be wrong.

I think Kraft is being partly truthful and is partly full of crap. Pretty obvious that he is just being a puppet for whatever the league wants him to say. With the Pats having leverage on most of their free agents he can keep toting this line. I don't think the Patriots will make any long-term big impact signings unless it is a very cap friendly deal.

Wilfork at $8M may be a better value to the Pats than Ghostowski at $2.5M. Plus a think Ghost will be an RFA.

As of 4:32 PM on 9/7/2009 he has the Pats being under the cap by about about $5.56 million.

Some perspective from Vince Carruci of nfl.com " on what $5.56 represents Now the Pats enter the regular season with about $5.5 million in cap space rather than the $1.9 million they had while carrying Seymour. Most clubs prefer a minimum cap cushion of $4 to $5 million in case they have to sign a player or two because of holes that might suddenly crop up due to injuries or other reasons."

Then perhaps it just a matter of calling the extension of Neal a minor extension like LeVoir. Isn't this just semantics? Besides, rhan Kraft said that he didn't have the cap room to sign one of the four. Now he does, and can free up a bit more cap room by extending Faulk.

BTW, what is the alternative? Are we really going to push cap money forward into 2010 when either there will be no cap or a much larger one?

I don't know about that. Gostkowski's one of the best in the league. He's a great field goal kicker, and may be the best in the league in the unheralded, but more important part of his job: kicking off. The patriots get a whole bunch of free field position every game from him outkicking their opponent.

We keep thinking that we are choosing. I would extended either one if they were willing. If both are willing, then there is a decision. I find it very unlikely that both are ready to extend at terms now acceptable to the patriots.

Also, paying a little extra for Gostkowski is much more manageable than paying a tlittle extra for Wilfork. I could see paying Gostkowski $3.5M a year and locking him in long-term.

He has nice hands, is deadly once you get him the ball with some space, and a much more friendly contract than Faulk. Plus, if you pair him with a power back (the way he was paired with Corey Dillon his rookie year) then he will be much more effective as a change-of-pace back.

I love Faulk, but I don't see extending a 34 year RB.

I agree that Maroney could take Faulk's role next year in his last year. I suspect that Belichick would prefer having Faulk around for another year or two, perhaps not.

Another possibility is to extend Maroney. As you point out, there are several potential roles for him: sharing the RB load as part of a 1-2 punch, and as a 3rd down pack. Maroney is also a returner. This is Belichick's kind of player. BTW, as with Faulk, it really doesn't matter whether you call Maroney the #1, #2, #3 or #4 back.

As much as I want Maroney to replace Faulk, I don't see a 1st round RB who is supposed to be a #1 running back agreeing to take a lesser role for the benefit of the team. He would go into free agency.

I don't expect Maroney to do anything that doesn't benefit Maroney. He might look at Faulk's career at the patriots and consider whether he has done well and has been well-compensated.
