Brady, Belichick should brace for blitzes

If this is true, then that sound you hear is the sound of a 50 TD season record preparing to fall.

The only thing I'm worried about re: Brady is a late or cheap hit - - especially given who now coaches the NY Jets.

Blitzing Brady is a dangerous proposition. If you cannot get pressure up the middle, he will eat opposing defenses for lunch. Brady's quick release is a blitz killer. The reason why the Giants had success against Brady in the Super Bowl is because they got pressure up the middle which neutralized him from stepping up in the pocket to avoid the blitz that he does masterfully. With pocket passers like Brady and Manning, outside blitzes aren't usually effective because they can still step up in the pocket. You need to collapse the pocket to neutralize them.

Exactly! Blitzing Brady plays into the Pats hands. Leaving Welker and Moss one on one with Brady's quick release and pocket presense is a recipe for success for the Pats.

Someone should ask the Steelers how those zone blitzes have worked against Brady. Perhaps the article should review what opponents can replicate the Giants front line and what new wrinkles can be added.

Well duh...

Talking about cheap shots..There were a ton in the Giants game..one would have thought that Coughlin might be talked to...since it was a lot..but then again Goodell wears NY colors so...not happening..

I think we'll see more blitz oriented defenses across the league. With the increase of PI penalties and the stiffer interpretation by officials of those rules, coaches have little options except to disrupt the pass at its source. In their desire to increase scoring by limiting DB to receiver contact, the league has inadvertently made the game more dangerous for the QB. May the best O-line win.

kirwan also has some knowledge about football and he is talking about these firezone blitzes. in the SB the giants pressured with their front 4 but i assumethey also blitzed creatively. the fact that kirwan says that bb told himthat he looked all all things during the offseason means this is somewhat creative then just all out blitzing and brady picking them apart.

Well duh...

That was my thought. "Wow. Gee, you mean, if you have an elite NFL quarterback, you should try to get as much pressure on him as possible? Good thing they cleared that up!"

But, as has been shown, more often than not Brady eats up the blitz. The O-line is usually good at pass-blocking (except TGTSNBN) and he's happy with either three-step drops or being in the shotgun. In fact, it seems teams have a better success when they blanket the receivers and make him look around for a while and hit the relief valve... which, of course, leads to the death of 1000 cuts (or, "the death of 1000 6-yard gains by a short pass to a running back")...

If you blitz with less personel than the Oline but still able to get penetration then it would allow you to have extra players back to cover zones.

Blitz is by definition sending 5 or more players, so it is impossible to blitz with less personnel than the OL.

Heh....

Tom Brady 2007 stats (when blitzed):

155/231 = 67.1%
1882 yards
8.1YPA
15TDs
2INTs
110.0 rating

Great stats. The Giants were able to disrupt the Pats' offense because they got pressure up the middle *without* blitzing. Not many teams can do that, but if they can, sure, they can cause even the Pats lots of problems.

Right, which makes me ask -- were the Giants really blitzing constantly in that SB? Or were they just getting pressure with their great defensive line?

Ding, Ding, Ding.

We have a winner.

Bad day, injuries to Linemen and just awesome pass rushing from every Lineman on the Giants. From Osi down to their 4th backup.

Damn right, they are going to send the house. Brian fricking Hoyer is the backup. Brady is older, slower and maybe a little more apprehensive. Welker missing any games doesn’t help. Look for the Ravens and Jets to be very aggressive.

The Pats will counter with a more balanced approach and lots of shots deep to Galloway, who should see a lot of 1:1 coverage .

So if the Pats run their standard 3-wide, TE, single back set and you want to blitz them:

- You send at least 5 on the pass rush
- You have to shade Moss with a safety (or double cover)

That leaves 4 players on the defense. With Welker, Galloway, Faulk and Watson as receivers. All single covered. No deep help. And this is a situation you want as a defense?

If you play zone, you will get killed underneath (Jacksonville...hello!). And if the Pats keep back a TE or RB (or max protect with both), then your DBs will have to cover even longer.

Blitzing is a losing proposition against Brady and that pass offense. The key is to get pressure using only 4 rushers. The best way to do that is to bring the rush from a variety of places, hopefully confusing the protection.
