Patriots claim defensive back, cut Greg Lewis

The New England Patriots cut veteran wide receiver Greg Lewis today, according to a league source.

And the Patriots used his roster spot to claim safety Bret Lockett off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

Lockett went undrafted out of UCLA this spring.

Lewis has caught 127 career passes for 1,699 yards and seven touchdowns while also recording 41 special teams tackles.

According to a league source, Lewis was surprised by the cut.

The Patriots had traded a fifth-round pick for Lewis as well as a 2010 seventh-rounder.

The move could be a shuffling of the roster with the Pats facing some injuries, and they also could have been motivated to not have to guarantee the contract as he's a vested veteran.

The Patriots are expected to stay in touch with Lewis, but he is actively seeking a job elsewhere now.

Here's the brief text from Reiss' Pieces:

The Patriots released receiver Greg Lewis today, according to a league source.

Lewis, a seven-year veteran, was acquired from the Eagles in March. The Patriots acquired Lewis along with a seventh-round draft choice for a fifth-round draft pick.

Well, that was a wasted draft pick.

You're just a contrarian! This was a great way to get rid of an overpriced 5th round pick and get a much more affordable 7th.

I'm disappointed that Lewis didn't work out here. I thought he was a very decent pickup...having watched some of his career with Philly. He was completely invisible this preseason. I can't say I'm that surprised.

Can anybody rattle off the recent list of players the Patriots trade for, that don't hang with the team very long? Even a team with a great record like the Patriots, seems to miss quite a bit in the personnel department. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.
