Hear me out... it's just a gut reaction theory but could have some merit...

Belichick is in position to have the #1 pick in the 2011 draft - either outright from the Raiders or by packaging picks to move up.

With a new CBA there could also be an agreement to limit the outrageous salaries of the Top 5 picks (at least) and a salary slotting structure as well.

No doubt, none of expect Brady's skills to be waning 2 years from now... but it never hurts to have a future franchise QB learn the ropes from someone like Brady, sitting and learning a la Steve Young behind Joe Montana for a year or two... today's salary structure makes that near impossible but a CBA that limits rookie salaries could make that feasible.

So the QB sits and learns for two years... depending on how things shake out he's ready to start in 2013 when Brady is 36.

That's an age when a QB's talents could be waning... or BB could determine it's the optimum time to trade Brady himself for a #1 pick etc...

I'm not saying this is what Belichick is thinking today, but he's set himself up nicely to have the draft position to take a franchise player, and whether its 4 years from now or 6 we WILL need another franchise QB.

Just a theory.

maybe they will not resign Brady

BB doesn't need a first rnd pick to get a QB hes proven that.
Maybe BB packags it next year to move up and take someone like Cody or Suh

It hurts to even think this, but I'll just throw it out there...

Brady's contract is up after this season - not 2011.

But I don't think you'll see Brady signed to a contract that's going to run 7 years like other younger QBs out there.

Signing Brady til he's 38 and drafting a Franchsie QB who could be ready to play in 2013 when Brady is 36 and still has enough trade value to warrant a #1st round pick himself?

That strikes me as the types of wheels within wheels thinking that Belichick prides himself on... no one knows what will be happening at any of these points in time - the important thing is that Belichick has given himself the flexibility to re-create a dynasty for another generation.

It's up after 2010, neither this year nor 2011.

Belichick is just thinking of value, if circumstances dictate QB then we will have the firepower. If not, then he'll go in another direction.

Bingo! Next year, we will be talking about the Tom Brady trade.

Tom will not settle for a large hometown discount the next time

around. Not after seeing all his peers get big bucks.

No.

He will develop Brady's backup as he did Cassel. He's not going to pay some top five draft pick $75M to learn to play within the system. Look what he got out of the 3rd round last season. Look at the former first rounders littering the benches and waiver wires of the NFL.

This was a way to get a first for Seymour. Wasn't gonna draw anything approaching that in 2010 because he's over 30 and in the last year of his deal. For any trading partner he was a one or two (at the franchise tag price...) year rental.

Richard is gone now because he never quite bought all in. And he was injured a lot and couldn't play well trough injuries. Brady consistently has. 85% of Brady is still better than top 5 at the position. 85% of Seymour might as well be on the sidelines. That's probably part of what Hobbs was illuding to. Hindsight is always 20/20 but Richard probably should have been traded after his TC holdout season. They instead took a compromise approach of sorts and gave him his money but only on a short term deal.

This is just about turning over the defense. Seymour was never really a leader, though they tried just about everything to develop him into one. Unfortunately his temperement and being raised by Lawyer kinda set a course that made that impossible. They got his best years on the field cheap, and paid a premium for a couple of lackluster seasons. All in all it was a fair deal for both sides, particularly since we get value for him down the road.

I doubt BB did this as a message, Oakland is always just there... But it will be some kind of experience for Seymour working with the Hotel staff and playing in the black hole in a contract season...

On the flip side, think how much a team might be willing to give up in 2010 to take that "gamble" in 2011.

The possibility (probability?) of a Rookie salary cap makes a 1st rd pick in 2011 more valuable than a 2010 pick.

Brady will get another contract, if the right player is there of course it would be nice for him to be able to step in when Brady is 37-38. Too far out good value since we most likely wouldn't sign Sey anyway, Mankins and Wilfolk are higher priorities IMO.

Crystal balls aside, I don't see BB drafting a QB that high. He has proven to all of us that his value is on both sides of the line. If he keeps the pick, expect a lineman drafted that high.
Also, there is speculation that this pick may be in jeopardy because of the uncertainty that there will be a 2011 draft. Of course there will be. Both sides (owners & players) will continue to worship the 'golden goose' while it is there. It is a small concession on the part of the players to implement a rookie salary cap. Most of the tenured veterans already think it is necessary - because it is money out of their pocket.

Right but for the wrong reason.

As I posted in the Seymour thread, the CBA mandates a draft in 2011, lockout or no lockout.

You presented your argument well, but I don't think Belichick would ever use a high pick on a QB, and I don't think it's related to the prohibitively expensive contracts high picks are getting now.

Belichick will always use his picks on the most rare physical specimens, simply because of their rarity.

He's also found lightning in a bottle twice now, first with Brady, second with Cassel, and possibly third with Hoyer. Clearly his draft process works, and his QB development process works as well.

Belichick can get the most value if he continues using high picks on elite D-line players, and grooming QB's under his QB school.

Seymour is 29 years old and had one lingering injury that came about on a play where the Patriots were using him out of position, as a fullback.

BB drafts as he needs to. He doesn't have a policy. If he sees a QB he needs as a #1 pick, he'll trade up for him. ANd there should soon be a cap on Rookie salaries.

He's thinking top 5 pick - best player available. With a rookie cap in place, maybe that pick is a QB. With a rookie cap in place, that might be 3 future first round picks to a QB hungry team that can now afford to gamble on a QB !

Que sera, sera.

Doubtful IMO. This is all about value.

Good chance we aren't even going to be taking a player with that pick.

I doubt he will go for a qb that high I think a a first round pick in 2011 is better than in 2010.

1. No one can predict where a draft pick for next year is worth let alone 2 years time and if anyone thinks the raiders can't pick up in a season just look at miami last season. with the right personnel it is possible to change in little time.

2. The economic state of the US could be far more stable than in 2010 running an NFL team can't be cheap.

3. We have 2 years to scout for it asses what we need and who could best fill that.

4. We have 2 picks in the first round we can trade away if we like.

There is no doubt in my mind that Pats will draft Tim Tebow next year.

I dont know about the 1st round QB in '11 or anything. That's 2 years away. But I will tell you who I do think he's fully aware of - TIM TEBOW. We have three 2nd rounders next year, and more than likely a late 1st. Tebow will absolutely be on our radar next year if he's gonna get screwed again and see his draft value slide. There'd be no limit to the ways BB could use him for the next 4 or 5 years. Tebow in the backfield with Brady would screw teams up to no end.
