Cowboys' Jones rips revenue sharing, pushes for new Vikings stadium

Jones received public help to build his football palace, and he said a public-private partnership is essential to make it work.
"The leadership have got to recognize that you cannot build one unless you have contributions," Jones said. "You've got to have some help from the public. You've got to have some help from your fans. And you've got to be willing to make a big commitment financially. The Wilfs are doing that."




Zygi Wilf has never threatened to move the team, but Jones said revenue sharing likely will decrease significantly, if not disappear altogether, when the collective bargaining agreement expires after next season.

Could it be that owners like Jones, Al Davis and Dan Snyder are sick and tired of carrying teams like the Jaquars, Vikings, and Bills??? And having to give tons of their hard earned revenue to those teams just so they can be competitive??? Could Kraft also be one of the owners??

Could the decision to pull out of the CBA actually have been orchestrated by the owners who are the "HAVES" of the league???

This is going to make things really really interesting for the next CBA...

An interesting situation to watch, for sure. But how do the low revenue teams survive? Do we shrink the league, move teams around or what? Maybe more stadium sharing?

I think Kraft, unlike the Bill runs his team, will speak to the issue publicly when it's time. Revenue sharing is bad business, imo. The NFL will be in a position to rethink their values, and probably it will signal the beginning of a rookie cap, bringing the overall cap back into reason.

Can't wait to see what goes down after the Pats hoist another Lombardi.

Could be but if it becomes the status quo for the long run it will have a ******ant effect on the game and league.

College football has 4x as many teams and they produce not that many more competitive games each week because of the disparity between funded and underfunded programs. These programs also have built-in audiences with students and alma mater.

Nerf a third of the league and you'll end up with fewer eyeballs being draw to the game over time.

EDIT: should say, competitive and compelling. Few care if North Texas vs. UL-Lafayette is competitive or not.

At this point, I think it's a ploy to help Zygi Wilf get negotiating leverage for a new stadium, so that he can go back to the local govt and say: "look, if revenue sharing goes away, and we don't have a new stadium in the pipeline, I have to leave just for the team to survive. The status quo isn't an option." Once you convince them that it's a function of survival, rather than increasing profits, they might change their tune.

JSn - As far as I know, they have been revenue sharing since they installed the cap. And the league has enjoyed is best prosperity while the cap has been in place. If they stop the revenue sharing, I think it will be a bad thing for the league. You will, almost certainly, see teams like the Jaguars and possibly the Bengals, Cardinals, and Bills fold. It will go back to the days of the 70's and 80's where you had the Haves and the Have Nots..

If they eliminate Revenue sharing in its entirety, then you will have teams negotiating their own contracts and you could actually end up alienating many fans since no revenue sharing would eliminate the contracts that the league gets from ESPN and DirecTV. And if you eliminate those contracts, you could end up alienating fans from their teams because the current contracts allow the league to by-pass the FCC black-out rules and be able to watch their teams. However, it could make it easier for the league to show games out of market because the teams will be able to negotiate for their own "channel" per se and that would allow fans to pay for say All 16 Pats games in HD for less than what DirecTV charges currently..

Its not a matter of them moving. Its a matter of them going under period. As I mentioned the league could lose numerous franchises. And spreading to Canada and London is NOT the answer.

I think that you are 100% correct that Jones is out of his mind. The fact that he robbed the city of Arlington blind and got them to say "Thank you, Mr. Jones, is there anything else you'd like to take" is bad enough. There are also may be some environmental impacts on the properties that are down stream from where the stadium storm water runs off. Six Flags of Texas could be facing some serious issues..

City of Industry in L.A. approved a football stadium last year, I believe. Reading (barely) between the lines, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Chargers move, although I gotta wonder how they'll feel about being the second-rate attraction behind a college team

You don't know how right you are about that. Not only is the State of California bankrupt, but many of the Counties in California are also bankrupt. And the Counties are trying to screw the residents in turn by RAISING the appraisal amounts on homes.

My parents, who paid $510K for their house in 2007, had it appraised this year by the bank for $425K when they tried to re-finance. San Diego County tried to re-assess the value of their home to $550K.

So, you are 100% correct in saying that the Chargers will be moving or closing shop before they get a new stadium in San Diego.

I'm not a huge fan of the "taxpayer" paying for stadiums. But you can't compare any of what you threw in there to taxpayers paying for stadiums. Sports teams generate large amounts of tax revenue. People come from all over the country to attend football games. I know when I go to a game in another state, I have to pay a lodging tax, sales tax, gas tax, food tax, rental car tax, airport tax etc.... all to attend one game. Now if I stay for a week which I usually do, I spend money in restaurants, tourist traps etc...

It is beyond shortminded to compare a sports team to a normal business or a tax sucking program. I can't think of a non-sports event that can bring up to 20,000-30,000 people from out of town/state on a weekly and even daily basis for other leagues.

Sports teams and public stadiums (concerts, functions...etc) generate a ton of revenue for the city/state. Between sales taxes for food and beer - payroll taxes for the thousands of people it takes to operate a stadium for a single event, parking revenue (I know Cincy gets all of the parking revenue collected by the city parking lots, which is 99% of the parking for a Bengals game), not to mention the payroll taxes for the players and the business taxes collected against the teams earnings. Lets not pretend it's something that it isn't....a handout!

Yet they still don't put the same effort into marketing, they don't inves the same percentage into payroll, scouting etc... as the Krafts, Jones, Snyders.

Buffalo plays in a taxpayer funded stadium...the third oldest one(San Fran and Oakland are older). Wilson's games in Toronto are attempts to get a new stadium for the Bills, it's a legitimate threat to move out of the area to Toronto if they can't force someone around the area to build one for them.

Bingo! I love sports but I will not pay for rich owners to get new stadiums. The place the Chargers play in is fine. We have to save money to pay for the anchor babies. The good news is ...no jobs for them either...maybe they will go to Texas and help Jones out.

I've been to Qualcomm a few times.. I'd hardly say its "fine". But the City of San Diego is losing tons of revenue with it not being used by the Padres anymore, now that they have PetCo. I mean, there are only so many RV shows that one can do.. However, I think it would be a great place to renovate for new Convention Center...

You don't need a passport any longer. You can get a border ID, which only costs you $65.

But the border ID only works for border checks and Ports. You can't use it to fly. It looks like a license, but unfortunately for US citizens, some states have rendered a drivers license useless as a proof of citizenship. :banned:

I hadn't heard about the Border ID. The cruise lines tell their passengers to have your passport or don't expect to board.. At least that's what they told us..

Speaking of which.. I need to renew mine since it expires in January..
