Pats acquire TE Michael Matthews from Giants

Nice move -- I've always liked this kid Matthews. He is huge and strong. He's an excellent blocker, which will help the tackles and in 3 wide looks. He fits in perfectly and now there's a blend of talent at the TE position. He's not going to stretch the middle w/his lack of speed but that's not what the Pats will ask him to do, that will be Watson's role. Baker is a solid blocker and receiver and that's why he starts.

A good blocker I assume, given the lack of OL protection Brady's been getting.

It's unfortunate - whether injuries or poor play the OL has never truly given Belichick and Brady the ability to run the multiple TE sets I think they've always wanted to.

If the guy can block, I'll be happy.

I expect that he will block on the return teams. An open question is whether he can be a blocking fullback in short yardage situations.

Picture Matthews lined up next to Vollmer........bejeezus!

If he can block anywhere near as good as Graham he will be greeted with open arms!!
Maybe a TD or 2 would be good as well, I am not expecting #'s from him, but Graham proved what a STUD Blocking TE can mean.....

DEVASTATION!! :D

FWIW, Matthews played fullback in college as well as tight end.

He could play the Hochstein role if needed......I wonder if he'll be showing off his Super Bowl ring around the locker room......NOT

Seeing that he played in all 16 games last season and only got 2 receptions for 26 yards, he looks like a scrub. If he's going to fill-in David Thomas's role, he better be able to block or getting rid of Thomas was a terrible move. :(

Multiple uses. Gotta love it. Looks like we'll be seeing some three tight end sets and I-Formations after all. Anybody know if he's a better blocker than Thomas?

???

Obviously, Belichick thinks that Matthews is a better blocker than Thomas or Matthews wouldn't be here instead of Thomas. Are you suggesting that we have some secret information? :)

You just said it yourself, but were backwards....
A SCRUB does NOT play all 16 games, a guy that plays all 16 games is a viable/valuable member of the team, definitely NOT a scrub..

He's obviously more of a BLOCKER than a receiver.........I have no issue with that, as the pats haven't had a good blocking TE since Graham left, and they have sorely needed one.

MAYBE he can catch a TD or 2 as well, as obviously noone will be watching him....

I agree, and btw, many people will hate your name on this forum! But some will love it.:p

Were you impressed by Thomas' blocking?

But the main question is how many plays he was in each game, two? He has scrub written all over him.

Ever considered that maybe Belichick didn't like the way Thomas looked as a fill-in fullback and didn't think he was a good enough tight end to keep on the final 53? He might not have gotten released just because his blocking wasn't up to snuff, y'know.

What?

2 plays each game?

Listen, the coaches aren't going to keep a guy on the active roster if he isn't somewhat active and responsible for his position, so I SERIOUSLY doubt he was used for 2 plays a game......

I was exaggerating it, but I really don't see him as an improvement to the team.. just another third string player.

Why would you say something so potentially stupid without looking it up first? He's started 11 regular season games in the last 2 years, and was the Giants' top run-blocking tight end. I remember him starting the SB in 2007 too. He saw tons of action.
