Who's the emergency QB?

We wouldn't want to use a roster spot for Hoyer if we don't have to. This way Edelman can be active as the #2 QB and Hoyer would be brought in if Brady were injured taking Edelman out of the game as well as Brady.

If there are official lists that the patriots submit, my guess is that the team can change them. Perhaps Miguel can tell us tomorrow. He is busy until 11.

Has Edelman even practiced at QB? Does he go to QB meetings?

If not, he's not the guy to take a couple snaps while Brady is checked out on the sidelines.

The NFL doesn't care if you have Defensive Lineman playing #2 QB for a team - that's their perogative.

What they do care about is that anyone who is designated the Emergency QB as the 46th man can't come in until the 4th Quarter - and if he does the other two are done for the day.

If Brady misses a few plays Edleman is more than competant enough to handoff for a few plays.

If Brady is out, losing Edleman for the rest of the game when Hoyer comes in will be the least of your worries.

I'd rather have an extra man on the Active Roster each week and live with the knowledge that Hoyer will be without the WR services of Edleman should he come in should Brady be seriously injured.

If a team wants to go into the game with a DL as their #2 QB they don't care.

The NFL DOES insist that the Emergency QB be designated as such if they want to carry 46 on the game day roster - and at that point the Emergency QB rules go into effect.

Do you really think the NFL is going to give the Patriots a hard time if they *gasp* ask a guy who played QB in college a year ago to serve as a *gasp* a backup QB?

I think they might. They certainly seem to care about jersey number assignments, for example. Do you have examples of this in the recent past?

The Emergency QB rule was one that was enacted because of quality of play issues: given the size of the active list, typically if a team is out two QBs in a game without the Emergency QB rule the quality of the product on the field deteriorates rapidly into something that is not recognizable as a pro style offense.

Why would the NFL not have a policy in place to stop teams from contravening the intent of the rule? Have we forgotten the byzantine rules involving the filming and handling of coaches tape?

I'm not talking about the media guide, I'm talking about the official gamebooks that include the rosters as reported by the teams, etc.
