For those of you into contract law and player obligations...

Let's say a player gets waived by a team and another team claims him from the waiver wire. What happens if the player doesn't WANT to play for that team? I know it prolly hasn't happened before, but this is a serious question.

What happens to the player when waived? Is he a free agent, or if a rookie, does he HAVE to accept the senior offer from another team?

If he's claimed and refuses to play, does the other team still incur a cap hit with his rookie contract, etc?

I was thinking about this this morning, and figured I'd toss it out there for the more rules-savvy to chew on.

Respects,

IIRC, the choices are play, hold out, or retire.

Re: Here's A Question......

They would be arrested, for being stupid enough to turn down an offer from ANY nfl team...for real, I hate the jets but if they call me, I'm on a plane in a second.

Re: Here's A Question......

With the large difference in salary and benefits between being on a Practice Squad and a NFL Roster, I think one would not be that stupid to do that. I'm not one with all the figures, but I think one would be smart and go for the opportunity to be on a team.

Yup... I concur. I was just wondering about what would happen in a case like that. Man's gotta eat, needs a paycheck, but some folks have hard feelings about some parts of the country, some cities, etc. You just never know.

Some folks just get a case of teh stoopids sometimes too..

If the player has less than 4 year's experience, they have no choice.

They go to the lowest ranked team that claims them.

the answer probably would not be made from normal contract law. id guess its in the collective bargaining agreeement

Then he's in violation of his contract. Part of his contract is that he agreed when he signed it he is subject to the waiver rules in which a team can waive their rights in a contract and another team can claim those rights within a certain time period. In affect, he agreed to play for any team under the contract. If he won't, he is in breech. He gets his originally agreed to salaries if a team claims him under the contract.

Once the waiver period passes, if no one claims him, the contract is void and he is free to sign with any team at the best deal he can make for himself.

Certain veterans, if they have enough time accrued in the league, aren't subject to waiver requirements and are simply released and become free agents immediately.
