From Twitter:

I'm now hearing it's going to be a wild day at tight end for the Pats. Stay tuned for details.

At least one Pats trade at tight end -- David Thomas goes to New Orleans for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick.

http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter

Now that's an interesting one.

That is interesting...as he was the one I thought was versatile..and would stay....THAT leaves an open spot for sure for a TE...with Watson, Smith and Baker...NIT a great situation.

I wish they would have gotten rid of smith instead

New York Giants traded tight end Michael Matthews to the Patriots for a conditional 2011 draft pick.

Schefter again.

Hmmm, Thomas was supposed to be the FB, yeah? Who is now, with Hochstein gone too?

Totally 100% agree. I thought for sure Thomas had done enough in camp to stick. Even as the FB option, the toughness... Maybe they're just trading him BEFORE he gets hurt (which, unfortunately, he will).

Wow, then we PICK up a TE all of a sudden ? This offseason has been WILD. Expect the unexpected. We gonna trade Brady for a 2011 pick and go Hoyer solo ? Let's get crazy !

2011 that long time for the comp...

Matthews is a pure blocking TE, yeah? Good, we could use one of those. I'm liking that swap.

Garrett Mills was cut by the Vikings .................. he's H-Back capable.

Why 2011 and not 2010? Drafting all these TE over the years was such a waste. I rather of seen LB and DB used with those picks.

Matthews was reportedly going to be one of the Giants cuts, so the 2011 conditional surely can't be more than a 7th.

Interestinger and interestinger.

Awesome, so our LB corps is likely cemented as Watson, Baker, Matthews. Great mix of talent, IMO. I know a lot of people here wanted Watson gone, but I still don't get why. He's a good TE, and I'm glad we kept him.

Reading a bit on Matthews- apparently he's known as an outstanding run blocker. I'm excited, we haven't had one of them since Daniel Graham left.

The Official Website of Michael Matthews

FWIW, an interesting recap of his career thus far.

"He illustrated his tremendous versatility by playing the "move tight end", H-Back, and the Double Tight End positions".

So a mix of David Thomas from this year, and Daniel Graham from previous years. Surely would be nice.

Ughhh....I was expecting big things from Thomas this year. Wish we traded Watson instead.

2011 that long time for the comp...

I mentioned this in another thread...BB doesn't want anymore draft choices for 2010.We're keeping a boatload this year,as it is.

Mark my words.....he's going to pkg picks to only draft 3 or 4 picks next year.Besides 2010 is liable to be an uncapped year.

Alex Smith will be/has been released per Schefter's twitter

Odd that Reiss and Rapp BOTH have him listed as Michael Mitchell....lol
As an update Reiss corrected it AND made a note of it...of course!!
