I'd be interested in knowing if these players are allowed to shop there services to other teams. I cant see why not. I also wonder if there will be any uproar over this. I can only imagone what people would say if it was Belichick doing it. How he is trying to cheat these players out of finding employment eith other teams and such. Either way, it would be looked upon negatively. I doubt the same will be done on the Steelers.

Saying he didn't want other NFL teams to learn in advance who was let go, Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said the final cuts won't be announced until Saturday, when all NFL teams must firm up their rosters.

Among those apparently cut Friday were fullback Carey Davis, who didn't play in Thursday night's preseason game against the Carolina Panthers; former Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, a seventh-round draft pick; and linebacker Bruce Davis, a third-round pick last year. Davis started 11 games for the Steelers the last two seasons.

One possible reason for the secrecy is that the Steelers might be trying to slide running back Isaac Redman from the active roster to the practice squad. Redman, an undrafted rookie from Bowie State, was the surprise star of training camp and scored three of the Steelers' five rushing touchdowns during the preseason.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that I'm no expert on this side of business for the NFL. But, in doing this, do they gain leverage that they can use to throw these guys back on the Practice Squad tomorrow before other teams scoop them up?

Bingo. When a team cuts a player early, they're doing them a favor- giving them a chance to talk to other teams before the inevitable rush. It's a classy move, and the kind that gets noticed by players who may be more likely to come to your camp in the future because of it, but no team is obligated to spread the word ahead of time. Realistically, it's the same as waiting to cut your guys at the last minute, though if the players decide that they don't like it they may be less likely to agree to sign to your PS.

Coach Mike Tomlin tried to keep their cuts quiet, but they're trickling out. Woods split time between special teams and the practice squad last season. Vincent never saw playing time after being signed as an undrafted free agent last season.

They aren't allowed to sign guys to the PS until after the final cut deadline, they can't do it tomorrow. Though of course they can start negotiating earlier with a player they want on the PS with the assumption he will clear waivers, but they could more or less do that even if the players weren't technically cut yet.

My guess if they want non-roster players gone so they can start preparing Saturday for their Thursday game, and just didn't want to give everyone else the advantage of knowing their cuts ahead of time.

So the only people they are keeping this from are the fans and media (who may find out anyway since most have a league insider on some team who feeds them info like waiver wire listings).

I agree, this story isn't making much sense. If they did make the cuts, then every other team knows who they were; the only ones that don't know are the fans and media.

The only thing I can think of is perhaps the Steelers have made their decisions and told the players, but are not going to turn those cuts in to the NFL and make the information public until the last moment.

Either that or Tomlin is clueless about the difference between making the announcement public and making the cut official with the NFL.

The Steelers' secrecy probably won't work -- no doubt the agents for any players told they weren't on the team immediately put the word out to other NFL teams. According to Tomlin, the Steelers also want to see if anyone else cut around the league might help them.

"From a business standpoint, it's not necessarily prudent to discuss those decisions publicly, to be quite honest," Tomlin said. "We've got another 24 hours here in which we can do some things, manipulate the bottom end of the roster if you will, or maybe even get potential (draft) picks for guys that we maybe think aren't going to be a part of it."

The cuts are already public. See, the media in Pittsburgh tends to follow the Steelers quite closely, especially as players leave the facility. So all the names of the cuts have been posted in various local reports. And of course that gives the players an extra day to prepare for their next career move, and gives those players' agents a day to start making calls to other teams.

That doesn't mean Tomlin is an idiot and will volunteer the names to be scrolled across the ticker for every FO around the league to see and evaluate, when no one else is doing so until the deadline tomorrow. There was also talk of possibly trading a veteran for draft picks or OL depth which might allow them to retain one or two of the cuts they really wanted to retain.

Read between the lines next time. Not everything you hear in a PC is the whole story.
