The second half of the 4th game of preseason is usually custom made for players that are not only on the bubble but are longshots to make the team.

Has anyone noticed that Watson played much of the second half at TE? - I did not see the game but heard reports that Watson played much of the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Is this a sign that he is a longshot to make the team? - If he was a lock I see no way he is out there late in this game,I think my dear Watson could be toast.

Well, there were only 4 TE's on the roster. Baker and Thomas didn't play, so Watson by default had to.

Same deal with Woods

Well, Alex Smith played too. The Pats are only carrying four TEs and two didn't dress. That means both Smith and Watson had to play most of the game.

Wouldn't Smith who we all think is not going to make it, be out there instead ? - Will Smith outduel Watson for the 3rd TE Spot?

Who played more Smith or Watson? - Once again like most here, I didn't see or hear the game.

The Pats were using 2 TE sets as well as using Watson as a H-Back/FB at times

plus, even if BB felt he made the team already, Watson could probably use some reps since he missed so much practice time in TC and in the first games

but who knows

You aren't paying attention. Smith WAS out there. Smith played the entire first half. And, in the 2nd half, Watson was out there because the Pats were running a lot of 2 TE sets. If you only have 4 TEs and 2 of them aren't playing (Baker and Thomas were dressed, but not playing), then by default, you have to put Watson out there.

Also, remember that Watson had been injured for the 1st two games. so he hasn't had a lot of playing time in this pre-season. This was a chance to get him playing time and help him get into game shape.

Smith did get banged up on one play. it wasn't serious, but we never know the full extent of injuries. it could've been enough to sideline him for some extra plays that he otherwise would have been out there. but again, it could've been for the sake of getting extra reps

Watson was on WEEI today. He knows he's on the bubble. He said it was humbling to play on special teams. He played okay. I think he'll stay, but have more of a role on special teams. Remember Izzo is gone, they'll be looking for a new captain.

I think Watson was listed as starting. But, frankly, neither he nor Smith did much out there that I remember, aside from one late-game snag Watson made.

It seems clear that BB has locked Baker and Thomas in as his two main TEs (or, at least, that Thomas has secured a spot thanks to his double-duty as a short-yardage FB). What he thinks about Smith and Watson, who knows. Maybe he was hoping Watson would showcase himself for a trade. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Watson stays around, but I wouldn't be surprised if they trade him before tomorrow. "Oven Mitts" has underachieved, but they may think he's got too much of an upside and they've made too much of an investment and commitment to cut him loose without another season-long look. (They might feel the same about Maroney.)

*knee slapper* Over mitts.. Don't quit your day job....or your night one for that matter.

Watson had 4 drops last season. That's it. People like you need to get off his case and get with reality. Moss had a TON of drops last year, so did Welker. Yet, I don't hear you calling them dump ass names... Maybe its just because you refuse to consider everything that has occured in Watson's career. I don't know. But it is clear that you clear over-react and exaggerate Watson's drops.

Watson hadn't played in the 1st two pre-season games and he played sparingly in the 3rd one. So he needed some reps. Not to mention that, as has been pointed out by several other people, Watson and Smith were the only two TEs playing last night. Its kinda hard to run a 2 TE set when you've only got 1 TE playing, now isn't it...

It seems clear that Baker, Thomas and Smith had gotten most of the reps in the 1st 3 games. Its clear that Smith was the worst of those 3 and by a wide margin. We don't know what the depth chart looks like. Baker, based on his contract, should be the #1, but who knows. None of us do.

Christopher Price's most recent article leads off w/ this, and has some really good content. Personally, I think it might have had something to do with all the other teams that had scouts at the game. Could be trying to drive up Watson's trade value a little bit by having him be a man among children against the scrubs. More likely, though, it just comes down to having 3 TEs who are going to make the team, so at least one guy who's making the team had to be playing last night. Could be that Ben just needed some reps to get good to go.

Captain = Sam Aiken.

I got the feeling last night that Watson is gone, or that if he isn't, the only reason he won't be is because Alex Smith has shown less than him this preseason. Don't you think it was a statement that he was out there playing and Baker and Thomas (along with the rest of the "starters") weren't?

Here's reality. Belichick brought in not one but two more tight ends this season. Baker, who most people think can't touch Watson's talent level, seems to have secured his position as the #1 guy. The Wendy's guy, fragile as he is, seems to have secured his position as the #2 guy thanks to his FB capabilities. And Watson, of whom you wax so eloquently, is running with the third-stringers in the last preseason game.

But, no, you're right. He's awesome. Which is why half the people think he'll probably be somewhere else by tomorrow afternoon...

Ben Watson needs all the reps he can get..........
