I think the fact that Belichick cut a high pick in O'Connell before the completion of his contract, speaks very well about Brian Hoyer's potential. Walter is going to be the backup #2 (unless we get Feeley). Basically, Brian Hoyer, an undrafted QB out of Michigan State, outplayed O'Connell for that #3 developmental spot. From some reports, it sounds like Hoyer has good accuracy and football intelligence, is brave in the pocket and very tough, but slow and also when under pressure can have bad feet or decisions. His last college season really grounded his draft chances.

WalterFootball.com: Brian Hoyer 2009 NFL Draft Scouting Report

-------
Hoyer's recent performance: 18 for 24, 241 yds, 1 td, no int, not too shabby. Obviously only the pre-season, but looked like he has been studying and working hard to learn the system.

O'Connell must have been very lazy, given that BB was willing to give a roster spot for years to a previous QB who had never started since HS.

I was looking for some confirmation on that thanks

I'd like to see the scouting reports on Brady. Vick is now fully eligible, but I don't think we are interested in Feely any longer. Walter not playing at all last night makes me thing he is in as veteran backup and Hoyer is in as developmental player.

I suspect BB liked KOC personally and also liked his game but knew Hoyer was going to beat him out. Therefore he released him early so he could sign on with another team before all the other cuts.

2000 Scouting Report from a low draft pick who likes hanging out with supermodels....

"Two-year starter. Very tall with a thin build. Needs to upgrade his overall strength. Pocket passer with average quickness. Can slide from pressure, but is not very elusive. Doesn't look to run. Holds the ball a bit low, but has a fairly quick release. Lacks a strong arm. Doesn't rifle the long outs, but he's an accurate passer with a good feel for touch. Sails some throws and hangs some deep balls. Leader. Eyeballs his primary target at times, but shows the ability to come off and find alternates. Generally makes good decisions. Had a good Orange Bowl.

Or maybe it had to do with upcoming cut and roster deadlines. I don't think Belichick ever liked KOC personally, I think he realized at some point that every player McDaniels personally scouted and vouched for, was actually garbage.

How do you know that? On EEI BB said that KOC "was a good kid and likable".
I've seen nothing that would make me think that BB didn't like him.

What if McD scouted Cassell, Guit, and others? Would that change your assessement of him?

Or... it could be they didn't want him getting injured before cutting him. If they know they have a trade pending for Feeley, Walter would be the odd guy out.

Why would you think BB didn't like O'Connell?

Because JMcD is maverick's personal scapegoat. [The fact that BB and Pioli both signed off on O'Connell notwithstanding.]

Good thing I can't read maverick's posts. How did I know he was going to take another opportunity to bash McDaniels. If McDaniels is that bad, what does that say about Belichick for drafting a guy in the third round (oh, yeah second round with Jackson since because he is a bust that he had to be scouted by Jackson) based on McDaniels' suggestion.

Seriously, the McDaniels stuff really needs to end. He is no longer with the team and we are about start a new season. I am sure maverick will figure out a way to blame McDaniels for every loss THIS YEAR too.

BTW, McDaniels only conducted O'Connell's private workout. That means that O'Connell was already scouted and put on the Pats' draft board before McDaniels got involved. O'Connell could have had a spectacular private workout and even if Belichick and Pioli were there, the place the Pats drafted him would have been the same. Offensive Coordinators do not scout players.

Scouts scout players and bring a list to Belichick (and at the time Pioli). Belichick then decides which players need a closer look and then he or someone else from the Pats will meet with him or not. Sending McDaniels and not just a regular scout, probably means that Belichick and/or Pioli were pretty high on the guy themselves.

Every draft pick especially a high pick is Belichick's and Pioli's decision, not McDaniels.

As has been mentioned here on this board, the Patriots had a scout at every one of O'Connell's games his senior year. So it's not like they just said, "WTF? Let's take O'Connell!"

cmon dudes. hoyer was playing against 3rd stringers. he did absolutely nothing against the first team. benjarvis was by far the player of this game and the reason why we won. all this hoyer love is ridic.

Well, BJGE didn't do well against the first string either. If you are going to discount Hoyer's night based on what he did vs. the starters, you gotta do that with BJGE.

McD could win the SB as a rookie head coach and it wouldn't change mav's assessment of him.

I like BJGE, but he had one good game against starters. He had a couple bad games against mediocre defenses (St. Louis for example). We don't have any idea what he can do against starters over the course of the year.

I went to MSU and watched all the games, the reason why he took so many chances and had unimpressive college stats is because MSU LOVES to run the ball. Javon Ringer was a beast here, he had like 43 rushing attempts against Florida Atlantic when MSU was annihilating them. He was durable, other teams would stack 8+ guys in the box and he just ran, ran, ran. The score or team didn't matter, MSU rushed it.

Not to mention MSU WRs had more drops than any other team in college football last year, I think it was like 70+ or something ridiculous. So not all the interceptions or bad stats are Hoyer's fault. I think due to the fact that Ringer was the man Hoyer felt like he had to take more chances since the coaches never really put the game in his hands.

That's what I think at least.

Andrew Walters was cut...

Brian Hoyer is a genuine "Find", as proved by the opinions of the only one who counts, Bill Belichick! :youtheman:
