Pass Interference... can someone explain??

OK.. I re-watched the game against the Skins and I have to say that the referees have me totally and utterly confused (/SARCASM) about what is Pass Interference.

Play One:

Patriots are in a 4 WR set with Baker lined up as the slot receiver on the left and Moss is the slot Receiver on the right.

Moss runs short crossing pattern from right to left where he runs up 3 yards and then cuts across, taking the man in coverage with him. Baker also runs a crossing pattern, but its from left to right. He runs out the 4 yards and then cuts across. The whole time Baker is running, the defender is jamming him and impeding his right to run his round. Mainly because he's within the 5 yards.

Moss's defender tries to avoid Baker as Moss is making the reception, yet still clips Baker, who is knocked over..

The Result: Baker gets called for Pass Interference..



The other play:
The Redskins have two receiver on the left hand side who seem to be running streaks. However, they cross their route about 8 yards out. As they do, the inside receiver clearly hits the outside Pats defender and also runs into Butler, who is trying to stay with him.

The Result: Butler gets called for the Illegal contact. He also got called for the Pass interference when their legs got caught up going into the endzone, but the ball should have been ruled uncatchable.

So, how is it that, in both cases, the Redskins players initiate the contact, yet the Pats players are the one flagged???

Unlike you I don't have DVR, but I do remember this play and the way I saw it, Baker got called for a pick.

seriously though. Its my understanding that within 5 yards of the los, they can slam each other all they want. So why was there any penalty? When Polian (oops i mean the Nfl) changed the rule years ago, i understood it to mean anything goes within 5 yards.

IMO they don't call picks nearly enough. They blew the call by flagging Butler, as usual, and happened to get it right with Baker.

This is correct. One thing that pisses me off is that anytime defenders have incidental contact with the WR they usually call Defensive PI. It seems like the defender has no rights to the ball anymore, can't bump the receiver too hard or blow on him too hard without getting a flag. They want an offensive game for the fans but that takes away from the hard nosed Defenses.

This is correct. One thing that pisses me off is that anytime defenders have incidental contact with the WR they usually call Defensive PI. It seems like the defender has no rights to the ball anymore, can't bump the receiver too hard or blow on him too hard without getting a flag. They want an offensive game for the fans but that takes away from the hard nosed Defenses.

My biggest complaint is how defensive PI penalties make me feel like I'm watching South American football (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Ok, can you explain why Baker got the penalty when he was the one who got bumped and knocked down? That is what doesn't make any sense.

Aside from just this play, there were several instances of the Redskins getting away w/ ridiculously blatant picks by their wideouts. Can someone explain that rule to me? It seems never called, but should be so illegal. This isn't basketball.

This is/was a staple of the Colts for a while. There is a fine line between a well designed play that tangles the defenders up, and a pick play, where the WR doesn't try to avoid the defender. I'd love to see pick plays called more often. Several times a year, I find myself screaming at the TV because of them.

I hate picks. I say either enforce it or make them legal. I don't care which way it goes, but I hate things that are "against the rules but almost never called".
