Re: Former Pats RB John Stephens Killed

Wow, that's terrible. RIP.

Re: Former Pats RB John Stephens Killed

Sad. I remember as a kid I loved watching him play. Didn't he absolutely crush someone on a run once? It was so bad the defensive player was carted off. Vs. the Niners maybe? I seem to recall him not being the same after that, but my memory could be playing tricks on me.

Anyway, he seemed to make some bad decisions off the field down the road. A good cautionary tale. Also, reading the article, another sad example of why you should always wear your seatbelt ...

Re: Former Pats RB John Stephens Killed

Its very sad when anyone paseses, but its worse when you followed them for a brief moment in their career. RIP, John... Another one taken too early..

One of the bright spots from the late 80's. Plus, he was pretty good in Tecmo Super Bowl. RIP.

Rip js....

News like this reminds us how lucky we are, and how thankful we should always be.

May he forever rest in peace.

You are referring to the hit on Jeff Fuller, 49ers safety. He suffered a spinal injury. Hes ok now though.

Too bad, RIP John...

sorry to hear this. RIP

Did anyone else read the comments below the article? I remember reading a thread on here about his most recent issue, but the comments paint an ugly picture.

Indeed ....

Always sad to see a player followed go before his time. Not to preach here. But the comments at the end of the article are a little sad. He will be judged by the MAN for what he has done in a much higher court. As will Phillips,OJ,Carruth etc. As much as I loathe some of those people it is hard not to feel some regret and sorrow for those who go down the wrong road.

I was at that game. It took place at Stanford Stadium because Candlestick was under repair due to the 1989 earthquake. It was sort of a weird thing because the collision between Fuller and Stephens was not one of those hits where it was obviously bad, but I think Fuller just got hit the wrong way and had to be carted off the field. He never played again.

When I first became a Pats fan in 1995, I would go to sports card stores and buy up all the old Pats cards I could find. One of them was of John Stephens; on the front it showed him in a Pats uniform, but under his name was the Packers' logo. On the back there was picture of him standing in front of Lambeau Field and the text said he had been traded there. I showed it to my friend who has Packers season tickets and said, "You remember this guy?" He said, "Yeah, he didn't do much for us [i.e. Green Bay] either." But that's why I remembered his name, he had played for "both" my favorite teams.

So long, John. :(
