From the Inquirer:

New England continues to be one of the more interesting suitors for Feeley because it may be willing to trade one of its tight ends. The Patriots would definitely be willing to deal Alex Smith, a 2005 third-round pick by Tampa Bay who was traded to the Patriots for a fifth-round pick in the off-season. The other tight ends on the New England roster are Ben Watson, Chris Baker and David Thomas. All three are ahead of Smith on the depth chart posted on New England's Web site.

The Eagles have been light at tight end since rookie Cornelius Ingram tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in early August. Brent Celek is the starter, but the backup situation is not clear.

Considering Smith is unlikely to make the final roster, I would definitely make that trade. At least the Pats wouldn't have wasted a fifth round pick that way.

Sirius NFL was talking about this an hour ago and they said Smith for Freeley is a good trade but may have to have the Pats hand over a late draft pick as well.

They also suggested a longshot trade....Lawrence Maroney for Feeley and Philly's 3rd rounder next season - I doubt that will happen, especially if Morris is ailing

I don't see Maroney getting traded for any reason especially not to the Eagles. What would the Eagles do with a RB? Even Westbrook needs to make his living as much as a a receiver as a runner to be what he is. Westbrook may be the best all purpose RB ever, but he has only gotten over a 1,000 yards rushing in a season twice. How would Maroney get any touches there.

Morris for Feeley and a 3rd I'd consider. . . .

And, really, don't the Pats have the Eagles' 7th as "change" from the Lewis trade?

I thought the idea of Philly acquiring Maroney was a bit bizzarre myself, especially considering that not only do they have the all purpose Westbrook but they drafted a RB high up - The only way I could see Philly taking Maroney is if another team has set up a trade with Philly with the assumption that Maroney is traded to them for a 3 way trade - But that does not seem likely,if fact impossible to happen.

Smith for Feeley straight-up would be kind of a steal, since the Pats will probably cut Smith anyway. If they have to send a 7th-rounder along with Smith for Feeley, that's fine by me.

Watson, on the other hand, they should get Feeley AND a pick.

With the age and injury history of Morris, Taylor, and Faulk, I doubt they trade Maroney. We can debate whether or not Maroney has a bright future in the league, but I think the Pats probably figure there's too much potential there to give up on at this moment. If he has another injury-filled season or a season of subpar numbers, that's different. (And, as much as I like BJGE, I think he's a good sub and not the every-down pounder.)

To go off the topic a bit,I have not seen much of him play but is J.T. O'Sullivan a decent QB? - I know that Watson to the Bengals has been a hot topic as well and wonder if O'Sullivan would be considered as part of a trade there as well.. Unless JT is not so good,I dont know much about him

I'd like the Smith trade for the Pats, even with a late rounder thrown in- Feeley is probably worth essentially a 5th and a 7th.

As for the Maroney trade? I'd love it for Philly, and I'd almost like to see it happen just because Maroney would do phenomenally well with them, but it makes absolutely no sense for the Pats.

I wrote after the Eagles scrimmage that Feeley was the best QB on the field that night. I'm not sure I'd want him as my #1 long term, but he's a huge upgrade over Walter and Hoyer. In fact I'd give them Smith and one of our myriad 7ths to make that happen.

JT OSullivan was also very good, but I think he's the solid #2 in Cinci.

BTW- If we happen to pick up a QB, I'd still want to go with 2 QBs plus Hoyer on the PS

Shady McCoy has been looking pretty good too so far, so I doubt Maroney would be in Philly's plans.

I think it'd be a steal for us to trade Alex Smith for a viable backup QB, even if they wanted a late rd pick thrown in too.

Is this the same AJ Feeley that played for the Dolphins in 2003-2004 season ? I recall watching 3 games to glory and seeing Feeley being badly beaten up by the Patriots defense. There was one funny clip where one of Feeley's Dolphins teammates slapped him on the butt after the play and he jumps as if he's been shot in the back.

While Feeley looked really good in that game, bear in mind that he's doing that with several years in the Philly system. Just because he can make the reads and throws required of him there doesn't mean he can make the more complicated reads required in the New England offense. I'm not saying he wouldn't be an upgrade over Walter. Feeley has shown he can perform when called upon. Walter has mostly shown that he can take a hit, get up, and get hit again. I'm just saying, he wouldn't look half as good as he does with Eagles for some time.

I hate to say this, but I think Ben Watson is the vulnerable tight end. Maybe Philly would have to add a low-round draft choice in a Feely trade, but they might not be willing to give him up for less.

As far as I 'm concerned, that trade would be ok. I really like Watson, but he hasn't delivered, let's face it. I feel pretty much the same way about Thomas. But unless Walter and Hoyer are a lot better than they seem, it's pretty clear that we need a proven backup qb.

The thing on this deal is that the Patriots cannot wait too long.

By waiting, they may lose the chance of trading with Cincinnatti

for a draft pick.

The pick that the Pats sent to Tampa for Smith may be "conditional" so something might happen to that 5th rd pick if the Pats cut Smith. That too has to be taken into account when thinking about a Feeley-Smith trade.

The Iggles are waiting on Godell to come out and say how long Vicks suspension (if any) will last. If he is going to suspended for say the first 6 games, then they will keep Feeley and put Vikc on the Suspended list, and then re-visit how to twaek the roster after week 6. If Godell says the suspension is say 0-2 games, then I think they (Iggles) will go ahead and move Feeley.

Feeley is a Patriots killer... he orchestrated that comeback win for the Dolphins in '04 and nearly led the Eagles to victory in '07. I remember thinking the same of Huard: better to have him than to have to face him.

Hmm. That'll work for me.

Or trade Ben Watson to the Redskins for a very young WR. They have a glut. How about Devin Thomas, who had good size and is fast? In a year or two, we may not have many truly capable or game-changing WRs on this team.

Moss will retire at some point. Welker will continue taking big-time abuse. Who else is there a couple of years from now?

That's a great idea! We certainly don't have any WRs on the roster now. And I'm sure the Redskins would give up last year's first rounder for Ben Watson when they already have Chris Cooley. Get a clue!

Mike Lombardi did a chat at NFP today and was asked about a TE for Feeley trade with the Pats. His response was the Pats wouldn't take Feeley...
