Reiss: O'Connell claimed by Detroit

According to Reiss' Twitter. Obviously they had first waiver priority. Schefter also said the Packers were expected to put a claim in, and obviously the Chiefs (3rd priority) probably put one in too.

The Lions just signed a QB today too, Brooks Bollinger.

Must mean the injuries to Culpepper and the other guy are more serious??

Good luck to you Okee!!!

I can't really think of a non-star player who Belichick cut abruptly, who then went on to become good. Can you?

Doesn't look too good for O'Connell's future if Belichick doesn't want him, the same objective coach willing to draft and keep a different QB who never started in college.

Or, if you can get a player who you know will make the roster for a 7th rounder and don't make the trade, then you have overvalued draft chocies.

If you're that desperate that you can't wait for a #3 QB, then you have bigger problems on your hands.

From New England to Detroit? Eesh, that's like getting dumped by Megan Fox and picked up by Rosie O'Donnell.

He could also be gone from Detroit in a matter of days. That's the beauty of finishing 0fer. First dibs on guys who cost nothing to claim and as a second year player he doesn't vest all season therefore if you cut him after the season starts you don't owe him a dime. beyond the week before he was cut.

Agreed but this is the last time I'll say it and I'll move on - I realize we would have traded him if we could but I simply cannot believe we couldn't get SOMETHING.

I have to agree here. It seemed pretty fast - his release. A team like the Bills might have given up something - 6th or 7th - they have zip at the position. Of course, trading in the division would be a bit of a stretch - but - they bit on Drew!

If it was simply that KOC wasn't going to fit, the team still could have worked to coach him up for the 4th preseason game to try and attract a potential trade partner.

The abruptness of his departure makes me think there was something attitude-wise that may eventually leak over to others on the team. We may never know, but it was an odd move from the FO, so I think there's more to it than the guy just didn't develop.

BB kept Cassel during the brutal pre season last year, and he hadn't played since HS. BB saw something.

BB drafted KOC, the kid doesn't have it, if he had it even 65% as good as Cassel in his first year, he'd be here. But he didn't

As for BB screwing up the drafting, let me know when it becomes a science, and let me know if you can name more then two teams that have drafted better then BB since he got here. You can't because just the Steelers and Colts have done better, and neither one of those have handled FA's (both leaving and coming) anywhere near as well as the Pats.

Easy to be a critic, not one person here could handle BB's job for a week.

He was a minimum salary player, and still only four teams put in a waiver claim for him. That's 4 teams interested in taking him without compensation.

Why on earth would we expect that teams would have been willing to give up picks?

It's not clear any team was willing to trade picks for O'Connell. The fact a few teams were willing to take him off waivers without giving up picks, doesn't mean he had trade value.

There are many other instances of QB's in this league who have been cut or released, who actually played decently in real games, with the original team getting nothing in return through a trade.

Josh McDaniels and Pioli are probably throwing hissy fits right now.
Their problem. The Patriots announced on Sunday that they told KOC that they were GOING TO release him. Then on Monday, the Pats filed the paperwork. All it would have taken was a phone call by the Broncos or Chiefs or anyone who wanted to get him. If no one called on Sunday to offer a 7th rounder then they have no gripe coming when Detroit claimed him on Tuesday.

BB isn't wired that way. He's going to use the last pre season game to get his 53 roster players ready and make his final determinations on PS players. Things that help this team win this season. He hasn't got the time to invest in marketing a guy who didn't fit his system. If there was anything attitude wise it was probably nothing more than he assumed he was safe because of what happened last season when in reality all that was was default. He either didn't or couldn't progress sufficiently to be even a backup here. My guess is BB determined that was couldn't. Whether he can progress sufficiently to make it somewhere else is immaterial.

Admit it, the Patriots simply goofed on this pick.

Okay, I'll admit it. I never shoulda recommended this guy to BB. I'm sorry. I really am.

Yeah, you're right, he'd use the game for the team's advantage and not just to get something back for KOC.

But there's something missing from this story. Oh well. Time to move on.

Re: Lions snatch O'Connell

Oh well, KOC. You could have been a disgruntled Patriot.
Now, it looks like you'll have to settle for being a disgruntled Lion.

Re: Lions snatch O'Connell

In Belchick we trust, but should we be nervous?

Damn. I gotta read more carefully. I thought I had a (very rare) scoop. No such luck.

Over losing a backup QB who couldn't play within the system to the Lions? Nah.

It's not the first time BB has miscalculated on the position. Rohan Davey comes to mind. He was replaced by Matt Cassel... So who knows, maybe Hoyer is another thinking man's diamond in the rough.
