Bruschi's cap hit was 1.9 Million in salary, 600K in signing bonus amortization and 107K in work out bonuses. His retiring leaves just the 707K in bonuses as a cap hit. So, a gross savings of 1.9 million.

Someone has to take the blame for this. It should be like that scene in "The Untouchables" where Al Capone uses a baseball bat to instill discipline.

The Patriots system doesn't work like that. In fact, its foolish to say that the scout who recommended him might be fired. Why? Well, first of all, after O'Connell was recommended by the Scout, he was worked out and interviewed by Josh McDaniels. Then, there were interviews by BB as well. And, to top it off, if a player didn't feel right to either Pioli or BB, he was taken off their draft board.

So, while the scout may have recommended O'Connell, McDaniels (who is gone), Pioli (who is gone) and Belichick had more prominent roles in drafting O'Connell.. Are you saying the Pats will fire Belichick over this? I think not.

I suspect the players Hoyer played against were of lower calibre than those KOC played against... I am gonna miss that : KOC.

It's about stats for fans, so we have a hard time extrapolating how well a player did based on the level of opponent's play. For coaches it is about how the QB executes the offense as in makes the right reads and checkdowns and gets the ball where it is supposed to go. ANd how well a player takes coaching.

I'm sure you are being facetious, but I think it's at least fair to say that the Patriots have drafted some real clunkers in the third round under BB. O'Connell, Brock Williams, Guss Scott were unmitigated disasters. And would anyone be that surprised if Tate, McKenzie and Crable were all gone by 2010?

Williams was injured even before he got to camp. McKenzie had the same thing happen.

McKenzie and Tate will get next season to show what they can do unless they absolutely stink on ice.

There is a large chunk of this fan base that really needs to go root for a team like the Bengals, so that they can learn to appreciate what they have here. No team hits on every pick.

1.) It's not a fact, it's an opinion. The phrase "a lot" precludes it from being fact, since "a lot" is not a specific thing.

2.) I'm 100% positive that I was referring to more than just yourself. That's where such wording as "You people" and "large chunk" come into play.

As for giving you a break, give us one. Calling players who's careers are derailed by injury "clunkers" is just ridiculous.

The FO has had some major misses, no doubt about it. But they've also had a lot of successes. And the early look at the class of 2009 suggests it may be our best overall draft yet. There's no reason to give up on people without taking a good look at them and giving them a chance. How long did James Harrison sit on the Steeler's roster before becoming an impact player?

Tate was injured LONG before his career with the Patriots started. The Patriots selected him knowing that.

Mills was cut in an effort to get him on the practice squad. BB was pissed when the Vikings claimed him and claimed the Vikings' David Herron for a week as retribution. Do you remember that?

Gimme a break. Womack was a late 7th rounder (237th overall), Williams blew out his knee and was never the same player, and BB wanted to keep Mills but didn't have the space on the 53 and lost him on a waiver claim by Minnesota.

The Pats knew Tate was hurt when they drafter him, in fact that's the only reason he was available in the 3rd round. McKenzie blew out his knee, but from the reports we've seen, he should be able to rebound.

The problem isn't that the Patriots draft busts, every team does. The problem is that some people refuse to acknowledge that the vast majority of draft picks in ANY round don't pan out.
