O'Connell and Hodel released, Pats down to 75

The Patriots confirmed the release of quarterback Kevin O'Connell today, and also released veteran long-snapper Nathan Hodel.

The departure of Hodel appears to signal that rookie Jake Ingram has won the long-snapping job.

The Pats are now down to 75, with Bruschi included among those 75 since he has not yet been placed on Reserve/Retired.

*Note: I do not believe the Pats have officially announced McKenzie to IR, meaning that the Pats are at 76. But both his and Bruschi's moves are anticipated to go down by 4 PM tomorrow.

But still, I can't believe that they just released O'Connell.

I'm surprised that they cut a #3 draft pick so quickly but it was

pretty obvious that O'Connell had regressed very badly from his

rookie year. Also, I thought that Hoyer looked better than O'Connell.

Here are the real number values. Please note that this does NOT account for the moving up of a player from outside the top 51.

Bruschi's cap hit was 1.9 Million in salary, 600K in signing bonus amortization and 107K in work out bonuses. His retiring leaves just the 707K in bonuses as a cap hit. So, a gross savings of 1.9 million.
