I don't live in NE, so this was the first game I've watched. I read that Sanders got a new contract and read the stories about how much Meriweather has improved. Last night, I saw nothing. Absolutely nothing.

You're missing one key stat there. And that is tackles..

Sanders - 2 full tackles, 2 assisted
Meriweather - 2 full tackles, 1 assisted

You have to be careful looking at the stats because they never tell the whole story. For instance, I can think of several questions that the stats don't answer:

1) Were they missing tackles or was the defense in front of them making all the plays?

2) How many defensive snaps did they each take?

3) Were Meriweather or Sanders used on the pass rush?

4) How often did they move Meriweather or Sanders up into the box?

All those questions and more come to mind..

BTW, if you watched the game, how could you have seen nothing?

Meriweather and Sanders both had solid plays that they made.

You're also forgetting that the purpose of preseason for NE is to evaluate players and plays, not really to win the game or make highlight reels.

I am not a Sanders fan, I didn't think he was particularly effective last night. Meriweather was in on some plays. I hope Chung can put Sanders on the sideline. Sanders tackles never have any pop and that's what the Pats are missing at safety.

I'm not a Sanders fan either, but to give him credit I saw him make a couple of tackles after others missed. He may not make bone crushing tackles, but he generally does wrap the other guy up.

That said, I'm hoping Chung moves into the starting rotation by mid-season. I think Sanders is a great 3rd safety, but only an adequate starter.

I noticed Sanders on a couple plays last night.

I thought the secondary as a whole was the weakest link last night.

Sanders and Merriweather not having big nights could be interprited as a good thing. It means the front seven were doing their job.

Since I saw Sanders make a big hit to stop a first down and a shoestring tackle, (both in the 4th quarter, I believe) I'd have to say those stats are wrong.

Just checked NFL.com. Your stats are wrong.

17 guys had 2 or 3 tackles, here's a smattering.

V. Ciurciu 3-1
G. Guyton 3-1
P. Lenon 3-2

A. Thomas 3-2
J. Wilhite 3-0

B. Meriweather 2-1

J. Sanders 2-2

Sanders is a nice little role player. Yes, he wraps up very well. He's playing with a wicked hitter in Chung and a great athlete in Merriweather. Why would we want him to be flying all over the field? Cautious good tackling gives us a great young corps of safeties who complement each other.

These are not my stats. They come from the game book @ patriots.com. I didn't include tackles or assists. Sometimes safeties make tackles at or near the LOS. Other times, they make tackles 20 yards (or 73 yards) downfield. When BB cut Lawyer before the 2003 season, the main reason was because he hadn't made any big plays in 2002 (See Patriot Reign, p. 176). Earlier in his career, Milloy was a playmaker. For a couple of years, Rodney was a playmaker. The Patriots have no playmakers at that position.

Dude, Meri is a playmaker. Did you watch him last year?

I have no earthly idea what you're talking about. I told you what I saw.

They have Merriweather and Chung. Sanders is solid and cautious. Definitely makes for a good threesome.
