Re: Mike Reiss leaves Globe for ESPNBoston.com [merged]

Just took a spin to Reiss' first post with the Globe, four years and one day ago:

Let's get it on - Reiss' Pieces

I'm guessing his first post with ESPN will look much the same, which will be comforting to many of us here.

God, has it really been 4 years since he jumped ship from the Herald? Time sure does fly...

Hey.. You know something.. maybe someone can make a conspiracy that Reiss should return to the Herald since the Pats haven't won a SB since he left... *LOL*

Sprinting towards the finish line?? Sounds like Mike wants to get out... *LOL* Don't think that's how he meant it... :D

I have mixed feelings too. I have been able to honor my non-pats, sox, celtics and boycott of ESPN since the infamous Wingo-Schlereth-Carter hour during the Matt Walsh press conference, but this will make it harder. Happy for Reiss, mad for selfish reasons.

For all those people saying this is a bad move...

and thus drive the local newspapers further into submission

...keep in mind that this makes idiots like John Tomasse and Ron Borges less relevant.

Actually, I think it is a good career move. The Globe has a lot of financial uncertainty. Reiss will now get broadcast exposure at both the local and national level. He is young, smart, and gets stories. Those guys tend to do well at ESPN. Look at Michael Smith. He has done a decent job moving up the later and gets decent amount of time on Sportcenter, NFL Live, etc. It is the old washed up guys who get delegated to Around the Horn.

Smith is/was a frequent guest panelist on the show when he first came to ESPN, Reiss will likely be on there to get him some national exposure/introduction to the ESPN audience.

Reiss will probably also see time on SportsCenter and ESPN2's First Take as a recurring guest interview and taking the role of their resident Patriots expert for major stories either on his own or when Michael Smith is unavailable.

you win, ESPN. Looks like I'm going to have to make a daily stop at ESPNBoston.com

Bad career move. Reiss will be lost in a sea of scrubs at ESPN.

As much as i hate espn it was excellent career move. Newspapers are sinking ships.

I wonder how Mike will fair as part of ESPN. I respect his dedication and hard work, but he doesn't have the writing chops to be a columnist or the x's and o's knowledge to be an analyst, and I doubt he'll get the same level of access now that he's part of The Network.

I dunno, ESPN has some pretty ****ty writers. Not saying that Reiss is great, but he'd be far from their worst columnist.

Congrats Mike! One of the best Beat Writers going - ESPN was smart to lure him in. Good move Reiss, better move for ESPN - Also, since it's Boston ESPN, can we call it BSPN even more?

I hope ESPN plans to revamp the espnboston.com website. Right now it's totally fugly and more importantly bereft of Patriots content.

I also hope they let Mike do the chats, mailbags etc. rather than just videos. Some of us like to, you know, actually read.

Good luck to Reiss. Based on my pure speculation, it seems like he probably has much more job security now based on the uncertain future of the Globe.

I wish he were staying at the Globe, but I have to agree that this might be a better long-term move for Reiss.

Yes, the site will be re-launched. That was the intention of this announcement in the first place.

Congrats to Reiss as this is a great move for him. Job security is a good thing and the Globes situation has to lay heavy on all the writers over there.

Looks like ESPN will win alot of us back. I still watched sportscenter as there was no good alternative other than for football on NFLnet but baseball and other sports I still needed ESPN though they suck with hockey. But I had boycotted there website mostly because you can find things everywhere else for good sports coverage the internet is endless. Reiss is too good not to follow.

It will be interesting to see how much this hurts the globe.

I don't agree that he can't be a columnist; surely that is a position that most writers grow into. The weakest part of his game is that his on-air presence is a bit stiff, but again, with some coaching and some time, he could improve that as well. I remember Remy not being very good when he started and look what's happened with him.

i can almost picture the negotiations to get Reiss to join the ESPN team

...I don't think that's Bristol

It's not a complete surprise, other than it happening just before the start of the NFL season. We've had a few discussions about the changing landscape of local sports information the last few months, such as the twitter thread and the Globe planning to charge for online content thread. I think the fact sites like weei.com, nesn.com, and csnne.com are starting to come around with enough content to make it worthwhile to visit - that's just going to make it that much more difficult for newspapers to compete going forward.

Hate espn for glamorizing tabloid gossip and pandering to the lowest common denominator, but give them credit for being ahead of the curve; they have a smart business model - I don't see cbs, fox or nbc doing this (yet).

Wherever he ends up, I'll be reading his stuff. Doesn't matter to me whether its in the globe or espn.

Re: Mike Reiss leaves Globe for ESPNBoston.com [merged]

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering 890's 3rd place standing in a now 3 horse race. Maybe they offered him a lot of $$$ to help develop/drive the website hits as a means to attract more listeners to the radio shows. Kind of like what WEEI did with Rob Bradford. Not sure what WBZ is planning to do on the web but heading to 890 doesn't sound like a smart local career move unless Mike believes it will get him national exposure.
I'm not sure it is a better careeer move to stick with an outfit in severe trouble. ESPN is more solvent and has better stability and a better future than the Globe.

Reiss must have gotten the Fatty Raise....

Boards like this really document to the corporate powers that be that Reiss has got some pretty universal respect from among Patriots fans.... they know he's a sure fire way to start getting readers immediately.

Hmmmm - maybe we should get a cut too! ;)
