Not sure why they re-signed Ortiz unless they don't plan on playing Moss and Welker that much in the next game. Though, they will still have Galloway, Lewis, Edelman, Aiken, and Nunn trying to impress..
Ortiz could be added just to play either Santana Moss or Antwaan Randel El on the scout team. The Pats add and drop players like crazy this time of the year.
I am not so sure about the WR position. Moss and Welker are set, but who is the third WR? and who backs up Moss? Galloway has not impressed in games or, according to Reiss, in practices, and it is not clear that Lewis can step up to a larger role than he has played.
So what, you think maybe it's a guy off the street?? LOL

They probably just need an extra body for practice.
Especially with Edelman continuing to be out.
Right, Edelman, Welker and Ventrone all did not practice today. Bodies are needed, but nobody seems to have stepped up to fill Gaffney's role yet.

While it is true that no one in two whole preseason games has stepped up to file Gaffney's role, Ortiz is not a candidate for anything but the Practice Squad, and will not even likely beat out Nunn for that roster spot.
We have brought in Lewis and Galloway to compete for that role, while keeping Aiken as backup receiver. Edelman could also surprise and get some reps, or not.
If he doesn't catch the ball, then that pretty much negates the speed threat offered to lessen the "heat" on Moss.Yeah, I gotta agree with you. However, I think that Edelman has a good chance to make the team because of what he's shown so far. Coach likes football players, and Edelman certainly isn't afraid to do whatever he's asked. He has a lot of different skill sets, so that's also a plus.
I think that Galloway makes the team, only because he's still got great speed and will take some heat away from Moss.

Just my 2¢....
McKenzie to IR. Wow! That one hit me like a ton of bricks. Never saw that one coming.
The guy's been catching balls for 15 years. I'm pretty sure he'll continue to catch- just needs some time to get used to Brady and vice versa. If you're going to be worried about anything, worry about something that does deteriorate over time, like ability to get open.
