Re: Chiefs cut loose Vince Redd

Still never got all the hype about this guy. Looks like his NFL career is probably done. You don't get cut twice from two different clubs before cutdown day in one preseason and go far anywhere else.

Re: Chiefs cut loose Vince Redd

The hype is the phenomenal athleticism that got him a scholarship, NFL contract, etc. Not enough of course, even with big time collegiate productivity (Chad Jackson).

Oh, I got the hype. The guy is an amazing physical specimen, seemingly custom-built to impossible specs to be a Pats OLB, and he played in Al Groh's 3-4 in college. So it was easy to see potential IF he could find the maturity and work ethic that eluded him in college. Some guys do manage to grow up fast when they hit the real world. Redd, clearly, isn't one of them. So it goes.

Re: Chiefs cut loose Vince Redd

He was cut by two teams with standards (I think the Chiefs have some now anyways). He'll end up somewhere I think, someone will be lured to his physical attributes and try to do something with him.

Foreshadowing his future Raiders signing?

They might pick him up but it's the doing something with him part that could elude the Oakland staff.

The guy was undrafted for a reason. Even though the guy played decent against third stringers last preseason, there were actually people who were hoping that this guy would contend for a starting position. I just never saw it. I knew this guy would never see the final 53 man roster and his best hope of staying Patriot is on the practice squad. Which is probably where he will end up on some team if he stays in the league. I don't see him making a 53 man roster anywhere.

Perhaps the big difference between a Chad Jackson (or Vernon Gholston) who scored a nice 1st contract and a undraftee like Redd is the college they attended. Liberty is certainly not Florida or Ohio State. If Redd was a better student are somehow gotten to be at a big time program, he'd be sitting on 1st/2nd round dough.

Very true...although didn't he start at Virginia?? Some guys have a lot of potential and work hard..others think they just have to go out on the field (CJackson) and they CAN be successful in college...BUT not in the NFL...

Yep, he was a big-time recruit but IIRC was booted from the UVA team for reasons that never fully became public. So he's had plenty of big chances.

He has tremendous size but is not very sudden. However I think there is something else going on that hasn't been made public yet that might explain this more.

Redd has only himself to blame. He left a big school in Virginia to follow his coach to Liberty. The question is whether he followed him because he really wanted to play for him or he was told that he wasn't good enough to get playing time under the new regime at Virginia.

Redd may not have been drafted if he stayed with Viriginia because he may not have duplicated his success at Virginia his last two years as he did in his last year at Liberty (he was redshirted his first). His numbers his first two years at Virginia didn't exactly scream that he was about to explode if he stayed.

I thought he decided to follow his coach (Rocco) to Liberty, but there was probably something more to it since it is a huge step back to move to Liberty from UVA.

FWIW, a couple of articles that reference Redd being kicked off the team:

SportingNews.com - Your expert source for NCAA Football stats, scores, standings, and blogs from NCAA Football columnists

U-Va. Athletes Charged After Fracas at Frat - washingtonpost.com

An excerpt from the Sporting News piece:

"Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks and two other defensive players are no longer members of the team, Cavaliers coach Al Groh announced Tuesday on the eve of spring practice.

...

"There's certain things that are vital to putting your team together every year, and those things become in sharper focus and are multiplied when you're in a rebuilding circumstance as we are," Groh said.

"Those thing are focus, commitment, dependability, and so while each one of these players' circumstance is distinctly different, in order to put the team together with some consistency and dependability, I've decided that it's best for us to move on from these circumstances, and it's best for these players to move on."

Re: Chiefs cut loose Vince Redd

In his release from the Patriots Belichick noted that, after a full year+ in the system, he wasn't progressing from college DE to 3-4 OLB, although he did have the size and speed. He suggested that he might be a better fit in another system.

Somewhat strange that KC picked him up, given the hope for a similar defense.

But a more classic 4-3 team might be a better spot for him.

Could be...but honestly, I took BB's comments as standard polite fictions. "You're a wonderful guy, but our lives are just moving in different directions."

Well, if he was kicked off the team. There was never a chance he was going to be drafted at any round.

You should have gone with the Washington Post piece, better fits why he moved on...

Five University of Virginia athletes and a former Cavaliers football player face criminal charges related to a break-in and fight at an off-campus fraternity house last month, Charlottesville police told the Associated Press.

Misdemeanor warrants were served last night to Zak Stair , a sophomore tackle on the football team; Eddie Pinigis , a junior tackle; Enonge Stovall , a freshman guard on the women's basketball team; and Vince Redd , a defensive end who was kicked off the football team last month.

Hard to be drafted when you were kicked off the team and arrested...
