Randy Moss has had a lot of adjectives attached to his name over the years: selfish, petulant, mercurial, brilliant.

But at the dawn of his third season with the Patriots, he’s picked up another description: mentor. In fact, the 32-year-old Moss has taken a proactive role as an advisor to new and veteran players who might be struggling to learn the New England system, as well as those teammates who want to know the trade secrets of the six-time Pro Bowler.

Hard to imagine now, but just a couple years ago there were many on this board who were more excited about the trade for Doug Gabriel than the trade for Randy Moss. And right about this time two years ago there were some - fueled by speculation from Tomase and Florio - that thought Moss would be cut before the start of the 2007 season.

How confident do you have to be to tell the team-mate you're competing with "this is what you're doing that is giving me trouble" or "this is what is helping me"? I suppose that being one of the greatest receivers ever to play the game must help ...

It looks like all Moss ever wanted is to be on a winning team with a menality and attitude to the game that matches his. Now he's found it he seems to be flourishing in the enviroment. The part I liked is what Faulk said about Randy telling them when to raise their hands for the catch so you dont alert the DB to the flight of the ball too quickly, those tiny details are what make him a great reciever.

I've always heard rookies who've played with Moss say how helpful he is.

Someone here in a camp report described Brady and Moss taking Edelperson aside and spending 2 on 1 personal time with the rook prior to game one. Good TC report catch!

Excellent piece! This shows a side of Moss that needs to be out there more. Great job Chris. Also an example of unselfish players who want to help each other in order to win. Kevin Faulk, who has caught more passes than any other Patriot (I believe) is still trying to improve. Impressive.

Thanks for the column Chris. It's unfortunate for Moss that nobody in the national media picks up on information such as this, and he ends up stuck with the (negative) image he was stereotyped with from several years ago.

My wife went from watching every Brady postgame with panting looks to being a huge fan of Moss' postgame interviews. It's obvious the guy is intelligent and has a 'ya gotta be on the lookout for it' sense of humor, not unilke the Dark Lord of the Sith BB himself.

As much as I'd like to attribute Moss' actions strictly to the Pats, the fact is that right from the beginning that Moss has ALWAYS been a good teammate and lockerroom guy. Most of Moss' problems were media creations.

For example he famous fake mooning of the the Packer crowd. What most people never heard was the traditionally a number of Packer fans would really moon the bus every time the Vikings came to Green Bay. If you think about it, Moss' "rebuttal" was kind of humorous and sort of in the spirit of the rivalry (BTW- does that count as 2 puns).

His walking off the field with 2 seconds left in the game was also blown way out of proportion, and I thought so even then.

Finally it must be great for Randy to have a true HOFer like himself on the same team, who has a similar work ethic and mind set, and best of all, Brady is the focus of the media, not Moss

Moss's reluctance to talk to the media is plain to see. They say that during 2007, he only started doing postgame press conferences because they were threatening to fine him. Whenever he does charity work, he never calls media attention to it. And he does a lot of charity work.

People say he was so terrible in Oakland, but Nnamdi Asomugha said the same things about Moss that Belichick was saying about how he helps the cornerbacks.
