Globe: Pats close to extension with Kaczur

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

Wilfork will be upset if he gets more than what most RTs get which is very doubtful.

Wilfork's not the only one that would be upset.

As I said in the previous thread...WHY?? I would rather see Mankins with a new deal before Kaczur.

Mankins will require a significant payraise to extend. Kaczur can be extended and stay at or around his current cap # for 2009.

We re-up the weaklest link in our offensive line ? Makes sense.........

Let's give James Sanders, a perennial role player, starters dough locked in at 3 years and let's re-up Nick Kaczur ? It all makes sense doesn't it....

Huh?

Do we know how much Kaczur received in his extension?

Well said.

There will probably be a $20-30 million dollar difference between the two contracts.

I can only assume they are trying to tie up some of the small fish within the constraints of the available cap room before going after the big fish in the offseason.

My priority for resigning2009 FAs as of right now is something like the following:

1. Wilfork
2a. Seymour
2b. Mankins
4. Gostkowski
5a. Bodden (assuming he does well)
5b. Burgess (assuming he does well)
7. Guyton
8a. Kaczur
8b. LeVoir

Most of the others I am uncertain about at this juncture, including Faulk (age), Green, and Galloway (age). Many of the others are JAGs.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

Right, I'm not sure why everyone is saying Wilfork will be pissed. He's asking for 5-times what Kaczur probably will sign for.

I have no problem with the team extending its starting right tackle. It doesn't mean that Wilfork won't be pissed about it, though. On the contrary, common sense would lead one to expect him to be annoyed by it, particularly given this other article:

Vollmer isn't that young stud? I beg to differ.

This could be bad news for Light. The Pats aren't extending Kaczur before he hits free agency so he can be demoted to a swing tackle soon.

Well put. Seabass and Kaczur could be the future tackles.

As a minor note, I believe LeVoir would be an RFA next year.

More importantly, Guyton will be an ERFA next year, so there's no rush to extend him.

That's part of why I had them further down in my list.

My point is that while we have around 26+ potential FAs after 2009, only about 1/3 of them are "core" players who we would obviously want to resign now. With older players, players with injury histories, and players whose salaries may exceed their value like Faulk, Neal, Galloway and Green there's no sense to decide if they are worth keeping beyond 2009 at this juncture. Many of the others either need to prove their worth or may not even make the roster: Wendell, Titus Adams, BJGE, Connolly, O'Callaghan, Britt, Yates, Hochstein (who arguably could fall into the end of the group above) Tank Williams, Ventrone, Ciurciu, Walter, Hanson, Hodel, Dave Thomas, Ben Watson, Lenon, Aiken, Alex Smith, TBC and Pierre Woods. There's certainly no need to move aggressively to extend any of these guys during the regular season.

That leaves 3 big money contracts (Wilfork, Seymour and Mankins), 2 RFAs (Guyton and LeVoir), 2 potentially largish contracts for veterans who haven't shown whether they will produce in our system (Burgess and Bodden), and 2 important role players (Kaczur and Gostkowski). As others have mentioned, Kaczur is probably an easier extension than Ghost. Whatever his deficiences, he has value as a cost-effective RT/swing tackle/possible OG, so I could see the FO wanting to lock him up for reasonable $ early on and have one less core player to deal with.

Well said sir, well said indeed.

Good article in the Globe this morning. Sack on Brady wasn't even Kazcur's fault. They called a running play, but Brady blew the call and held onto the ball. Announcers are blaming Kazcur, and it turns out it was not even suppose to be a pass play.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

Instead of dealing with the high salary items, the Patriots may

look to extending players like Gostowski, Kaczur, and Woods.

That would be smart, Kaczur makes sense because of the free agents along the O line (Mankins, Neal and Kaczur).

Good point. With 60% of the starting OL FA's after 2009 (pending whether Mankins is a UFA or a RFA), it makes some sense to lock up Kaczur early. One less piece of the puzzle to have to take care of.

I think the value fans put on a player is different from what the coaches put on. When the 05 draft was redone by SI after 3 yrs depending on production kazcur was drafted in the 1st round.

I think this is a great signing. As far as Matt Light goes i hope he stays as one he leaves i think the fans will appreciate him more like every thing. Look at the colts fans. They used used to rip glenn every freaking game and for the last 2 years they have been humbled by tony and johnson. They have put every OL in LT and could not get a decent performance out of any.
Now glenn the below starter quality LT is suddenly is used as a barometer for comparing all the losser LT.

satz

BTW. . . . here's a thought: if Kaczur is so awful, why did the Patriots go back to his OL coach? After all, Joe Gilbert, Vollmer's OL coach at Houston, was also Kaczur's OL coach at Toledo.

Meet the Rookies: Sebastian Vollmer

No progress with Vince Wilfork contract talks - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

I have a hard time reading into what he said. Like, what does he mean by moves? Players get signed to small deals everyday, but this is a different ball game.
