Per Reiss of course.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

That'll piss off Wilfork.

Get your popcorn ready.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

He was scheduled to make $2.27 this year, so perhaps this extension will lower that number. That could possibly help with the Vince talks.

Wilfork's looking to break the bank, Kaczur isn't. And if you dispute the first statement, the Patriots have shown they'll extend players early IF AND ONLY IF the team gets a solid deal.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

Instead of dealing with the high salary items, the Patriots may

look to extending players like Gostowski, Kaczur, and Woods.

Well, he's probably not looking for a double digit signing bonus or salary approaching that...

He was set to be one of the many 6th year RFA's. But given his present salary that would have made him a $2.5M RFA RT which is between the two top tenders (first round and first plus third). So he was going to make close to $5M over the next two years any who. Let's see what his signing bonus and first two years salaries or his guaranteed money is under the new deal. His new deal could easily lower or simply maintain his cap since where he was drafted he's mostly salary now and got little in the way of signing bonus (only $132K in remaining amortization).

Miguel has us at $3.5M under the cap (although I can't find what Walter is signed for so I'm not sure he's factored him in). And there may be a couple of million in cuts over the next two weeks if some of the largely salary veterans don't make the roster.

Most of the big boys get roughly half of their deal guaranteed. If Wilfork is looking for $50M+ ($8M+ per over 6) the Krafts could be reluctant to commit to that knowing that year 3 of his deal (or less than half way) he could be locked out... There are some guys you will commit to doing that for (like a franchise QB who's already a HOF lock). Can't do it for all of 'em.

I have a feeling that there are multiple philosophical differences underlying not getting the Wilfork extension done involving cap, cash and value...

I don't think Gostkowski is an easy extension.

What makes you say that? I don't see anything suggesting it'll be difficult, either.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

How do all the long-time Kaczur detractors feel about this?

What happens when they extend Maroney next year? Lots of weeping and gnashing of teeth, I'll bet.

chuckle chuckle

Not if Kazcur gets a below market deal which I would expect and his new salary lowers his 2009 cap number. Wilfork won't be upset if a guy takes less to stay here. Wilfork will be upset if he gets more than what most RTs get which is very doubtful.

does anyone want to address what this suggests about managements evaluation of Kaz? I never really thought he was all that good - with some really really horrible games mixed in with avg/below avg play time. I still feel like if O'callaghan didn't get hurt, there was a chance he could have taken that spot at RT.

People have been talking for years about moving Light to RT and getting a young stud in at LT to protect the franchise's blind side. Guess that is not in the works.

They will have to pay him top dollar for a kicker but not 8-10 million

per year with 25 million guaranteed.

Vollmer isn't that young stud? I beg to differ.

This could be bad news for Light. The Pats aren't extending Kaczur before he hits free agency so he can be demoted to a swing tackle soon.

Light would want LT money to play RT. Because he could leave and get LT money to play LT.

Right, I'm not sure why everyone is saying Wilfork will be pissed. He's asking for 5-times what Kaczur probably will sign for.

Re: Kaczur close to an extension?

This could just be the first domino to fall in a line of extensions for the would-be FA class of next year.

Hope you are right. There are about 26 potential free agents.

I don't expect the money to be all that much. Remember he was a 25 yo rookie and is now 30. His value in the coming years may be at the guard position as a possible replacement for Neal or even Mankins if he leaves. Wherever he ends up at, they are signing him for the fact that he can be at least marginal starter at four different positions. He filled in pretty good for Light in his rookie year at LT.

As I said in the previous thread...WHY?? I would rather see Mankins with a new deal before Kaczur.
