Thoughts on the Cornerbacks after two games?

It's my belief that all this Cb stuff last nite was intentional by Pees and BB.

Wheather it was Ochocinco or Chris Henry,the defense was NOT rotating A safety to that side.

It's preseason,they wanted to see what Wheatley could do,they left him out on an island,on purpose.

THAT'S how you evaluate people.....it's, trademark- belichick,imo.

Lastly,that pass from Sullivan to Henry,was phenomenal.

Exactly, BB's priority in preseason is not to win, it's to evaluate. If it's 4th and 16 in the regular season I don't think you'll see a heavy blitz with Wheatley(or any corner for that matter) left on an island with a WR as good as Chris Henry.

Exactly. We save those defensive calls only for crucial 3rd downs on game winning drives in the SB;)

(sorry, that's what it made me think of though:D)

Yeah. But Wheatley was still bad last night - both against the run and the pass. And he hasn't done much on ST either.

The secondary clearly looks like they're still trying to gel. That's the only reason that I'm not too concerned right now.

Yup - everyone should keep in mind that there's usually a big learning curve in the Pats defense.

The secondary dissapointed me overall but I'm not too worried yet. The corners seemed to be in pretty good position most of the game, they just missed far too many tackles, especially in the running game.

Butler looked very good. He had one deflection in the 2nd quarter on a pass intended for Andre Caldwell that was Asante-esque.

Wheatley's game was crap. Yes, he was forced to cover 6'4" Henry, but does anyone remember that Wheatley got burned for long TDs on 2 conscutive plays? The first was caled back on a penalty, then Wheatley was subsequently burned on the very next play.

Looks like people are ready to cut Wheatley already...HILARIOUS!

He showed some nice glimpses last year - mainly as a nickel back covering the slot.

Now after a couple of poor PRE-SEASON efforts he is suddenly the second coming of Deltha O'Neal.

People exercise little or no self control on this board and act like a bunch of spoilt children.

Coach really needs your input, 'cause he's on a different page about Springs:

From the Globe this morning:

Springs missed the first three days of camp with flu-like symptoms, practiced for two days, and then disappeared until returning to practice Monday. He (Belichick) said it won’t take him long to get back to form.

“He’s working hard at it mentally. He’s into everything. He makes very, very few mistakes,’’ said Belichick.

Grades after two games

Bodden = B+
Butler = B-
Love = C-
Springs = D- (did you see Benson juke him on the first or second series,. Pitiful.)
Wheatley = Incomplete

What is hilarious is that you think that Wheatley as of now is better than Deltha O'Neal. Wheatley will not be cut because we can afford the luxury of carrying a couple of developmental high draft choices on the inactive roster (Wheatley and Crable) in the hope that they will eventually mature into contributers.

If the 2009 season were the only consideration, I'd much rather have Deltha O'Neal as our #5 corner than Wheatley. Of course the hope is that Wheatley will be our 2010 nickel or even develop into a starter.

I don't believe I even said that.

Deltha O'Neal reached the peak of his curve before he even got here - Wheatley has plenty to learn and its simply way to early to judge what the peak of his curve is.

Deltha O'Neal is just a below par corner back and won't get any better - saying that you'd rather take that over Wheatley this year is a borderline strawman argument.

As far as i'm aware the world doesn't end after the 2009 season so your argument pro-Deltha is without merit.

As I posted earlier, I agree with keeping two developmental players on the 53-man rosters. Unless he improves a lot, I don't expect to see Wheatley active during the season unless there are injuries. He's the #9 defensive back, an inactive position.

Not sure why it's "hilarious" or shows a lack of self-control or being "spoilt children". The DB corps wasn't nearly as deep last season; they've added Springs, Bodden, Butler, Sanders, McGowan, and Tank Williams is back. It's not like they NEED Wheatley. He's coming off injury, and has looked bad. "Showing nice glimpses as a nickel back" (pre-injury) doesn't mean he's a lock, does it?

Yes. Given that Wheatley was a second round pick last season and had cracked the starting lineup before getting injured, it does.

He didn't get burned on the first play. Henry illegally pushed off. Thats why they call a penalty there.

Wheatly will be kept on the 53 man roster because he was a second
round draft pick. He will be given one more year to catch on to the
system.

Yes. Given that Wheatley was a second round pick last season and had cracked the starting lineup before getting injured, it does.

And, again, he "cracked the starting lineup" because the starting lineup kinda sucked. They've added quite a few guys since then.

And Wheatley's coming off injury.

And looked like sh*t.

And the fact that he was a second rounder is worth a lot. Ask Chad Jackson.

But, okay. He's a lock, 'cause you say so.

He looked like sh*t for one quarter of a preseason game. Why do you think thats even relevant? Do you really think the front office makes personnel decisions based on one quarter of preseason football?

But, okay. He's a lock, 'cause you say so.

No, he's a lock because he's a second round pick going into his second year. Very few players have already reached their peak this early (and those that have are usually at RB or occasionally LB and basically nowhere else).

I'll ask what I've already asked you (possibly on another thread):

Kindly list all the Patriots' second round draft picks that BB has cut either prior to or during their second season with the team.
