Usain Bolt a Patriot in 2010?.... Check out these numbers

Wasn't Tony Simmons a great track star at Wisconsin, which led to us drafting him?

This thread reminds me of my first ever favorite football player ... Bob Hayes. A track guy who could also play football ... he was great.

"The bomb to Hayes" ... was a favorite of the announcers.
I did not like the cowboys ... just Bob Hayes.

he ran the 100 in 9.1
He ran the 200 in 20.6

Those were great numbers in that era.

Bolt has run the 100m in 9.58
Hayes ran the 100m in 10.0 in 1964.

Renaldo Nehemaiah, Willie Gault and other track stars didn't particularly translate well into WRs. Bob Hayes was an exception, but he had football experience.

As others have pointed out, in today's world of big money track and field, there's no real incentive to switch to football. Bolt is already a mega star without having to take a pounding.

I was just watching Sportscenter and they did a brief interview with
Larry Rawson ESPN track in field. He had 3 amazing facts on Usain Bolt.
He said that he did the math and he can validate these numbers.

I had to DVR this so that I got the numbers correct.

Usain Bolt is 6 foot 5 inches and 200 lbs.

#1 From Home plate to the pitchers mound it is 60 feet 6 inches.
By the time Usain Bolt goes the first 60 feet 6 inches his is going 26 mph.

#2 His last 40 yards in a race (At top speed) he does in 2.95 seconds.

#3 He runs the first 40 yards in 3.82 seconds.
(3% to 5% of the fastest football players going into the NFL draft run a 4.4)

The question is..... can he catch a football???

I think Rawson may need to check his stopwatch. There are 109 yards in 100 m. Bolt's record is 9.58 seconds in the 100 m. According to Rawson, Bolt is running the 100:
First 40 yards: 3.82 sec/40 = .095 sec/yd
Last 40 yards: 2.95 sec/40 = .074 sec/yd
Remaining 29 yards: 2.81 sec/29 = .097 sec/yd

So, according to Rawson Bolt is faster at the beginning of the race than in the middle--not possible or true. So, it seems that Bolt is NOT running a 3.82 40-yard dash.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet, and especially anything you hear on ESPN!

I do wonder what Bolt's actual 40 is though, anyone?

It is fun to ponder Bolt as a WR, the guy is incredible.

What's his 40 if he is blasted at the line?

I suppose at 6'5" he might be able to get off a block, but it is no guarantee. Straight line speed is overrated.

maybe the sox should sign him as a pinch runner.

Sounds like an al Davis guy.:)

He'd be crazy to do it.

As much as I love football, track is much, much bigger worldwide than football. Millions more know "the fastest man on the earth" than the top American football players.

He can make more cash, doing less, and not getting concussions. He'd need to be crazy to do it.

Does he really make more than 9M per year as a sprinter?

Endorsements, sponsorship deals, and payments for winning medals at the World Championships and Olympics....all adds up, especially with such great publicity last year in Beijing.

Or shortstop, at this point.

Pitcher might be better if he has the same kind of speed in his arm that he does in his legs. That way we can dump Brad Penny and bring him on. :banned:

According to IAAF Analysis Split Times, Usain Bolt ran his FIRST 40m in 4.65 seconds.

Its amazing how often people just make things up in this forum. He's not a football player.

Didn't the Bengals do something like this back in the 80's/90's? I dont remember, but he tore up his ACL on his first play and could never run again.
So the equation is:
Track Star + NFL Team = Injured Track Star

This stupid-ass thread or one very like it is on nearly every forum I post on.

Inane.

Funny because overbearing, judgmental, stupid-ass replies from people with no sense of fun are on nearly every thread I read, like this one.

Incredible.
