Eagles fans already ripping Ellis Hobbs

I knew Hobbs would be a disaster in Philly, but I didn't think Hobbs would be blowing assignments on 70 yd completions this early. I gotta say this is music to my ears. Anyone happened to see Reggie Wayne abusing Hobbs on that TD last night? Just like old times. Anyway, it's week 2 of preseason and Hobbs is hearing it from the fans.

Hard to beef with him over the bomb, somehow there was failed communication, and he was under the belief he was getting help from the safety. I want to see more before i jump on and off the bandwagon of players from game to game.

Anyways, there are multiple ways to play the Cover 2. I have no idea how Philly runs it. I do not know if Cover 2 was called on that play. (I suspect none of the fans ripping Hobbs do either.) But Hobbs was playing classic Cover 2 technique there.

Most often, the corner has flats and run force, and his job is to play outside in. Consequently he abandons routes that head into the hashes — those are either picked up by the linebacker short or the safety long. The corner is responsible for the flats or possibly a secondary route — like a wheel route — that develops wide and deep off the primary route, since the safety will need to cover the primary. Additional deep inside routes are supposed to be followed by the linebacker.

If the receiver tries to release to the sideline, he is supposed to deny the sideline with a jam, sink with him to about 10-12 yards, then look for crossing routes and running back routes. The jam should allow the safety to get to the deep sideline with the receiver.

The receiver that beat Hobbs either ran a seam route into space or ran an uncovered flag. Under classic Cover 2 rules, Hobbs succeeded. He shoved the receiver's outside shoulder, then jumped off the route and looked for shallow routes as he got width. Hobbs would be wrong if (a) the Eagles weren't running a Cover 2 or (b) the Eagles run a corner-force Cover 2 that is abnormal. However, it's more likely the deep safety bit on something.

I'd sure like to see a full-field replay of that.

It really did, it looked like the eagles were in a cover 2 defense, the safety on his side got caught up with another receiver going down the middle which allowed Wayne to run free down the sideline. Looked like Indy had the perfect play called for that defense.

Gee. I can't ever remember that happening before. But the last guy who beat him like that (but it was Cover Zero that time) when it (really) counted just got 24 months in Attica, so the Colts should be careful.

LOL! Well, you showed us. Yes, now that the 2009 season is over, Hobbs has proven he is a disaster. And he got burnt on a pass by Peyton Manning to Reggie Wayne. Who gets burnt on a pass by Manning to Wayne? They are both bums!

Ah, the preseason brings out the winner threads.

Can we at least wait until the Eagles play at least one game that counts before anyone labels Hobbs a disaster. By this logic, you could have said at this point last year "See I told you the Pats should have cut Matt Cassel".

yup, that was a perfect fade route to gonzo I believe it was. Asante had no chance, it was pretty un-defendable.

That excuse is getting really old. On the first drive, I saw Ellis playing his usual 10 yards of the line of scrimmage and allow Wayne to not only catch a 5-7 stop route, but take that for an additional 10-15 yards because Hobb's took the worst angle possible. The guy flat out sucks as a CB.

Look im not trying to justify Hobbs in anyway, I think hes a 3rd or 4th CB in the NFL at best. Im just stating what I saw, Im by no means a football expert, but watching the play it did look like he was expecting safety help from my point of view. But what do I no im just telling it like I seen it is all.

it was as much the playcall as Hobbs...they were blitzing, which left him alone on Burress...a fact that was not lost on Mr. Manning...

Im just stating what I saw, Im by no means a football expert, but watching the play it did look like he was expecting safety help from my point of view. But what do I no im just telling it like I seen it is all.

Your right, after watching the highlight, Hobbs was covering the flat. However, after so many times of messing up, you start to think Hobbs is the one at fault.

Excellent insight, which just further demonstrates how pointless it is to come to conclusions based on the preseason. You get a bunch of guys who haven't played together and are learning new schemes, and stuff like this will happen. The whole point is to get this out of the way now so it's not happening so much in the regular season.

You get a bunch of guys who haven't played together and are learning new schemes, and stuff like this will happen. The whole point is to get this out of the way now so it's not happening so much in the regular season.
