Looks like Tedy is going to take a backseat to Mayo this season and not line up next to him like most thought,Looks like its the Mayo Guyton show on opening day and forward on with Tedy and other ILBs by committee in sporadically depending on formation and down situation.

A sad time to see the leader of the LB corps for the past decade riding the pines but its time for new blood.

This of course is reported by the Herald through Pats gab so take it as you wish.

Its sad, but its about time. Guyton is the better player at this point, and should be starting.

Not sure why this is a suprise. From the playcalling to the 4-3 (in which Mayo says he will have more room to operate and less time taking on OLs) potentially being used more than before, BB seems to be putting Mayo smack-dab into the role of playmaker for this D.

Is Belichcik giving Tedy a subtle notice that his time has come...and gone?

Is Tedy going to be the Surprise veteran Retirement?:(

I think that they have had that conversation and the gist of it was that BB feels he can still contribute to the team- but at a lesser role which I think Bru has accepted. IMO BB still wants Bru on the 45 man roster. Most importantly, he knows the D. Hes good insurance if Mayo (god forbid) goes down.

My .02$

Would think that BB and Tedy have talked about this in private.... if he does go it will be his choice, and he will do so gracefully..

Good. Hope it's true. Donlt wish Bruschi any ill, just think he's a part-time player at best these days.

I'm surprised this isn't making anyone go ballistic. I agree that it's time, but as a player-coach Bru is still very valuable.

One thing we have learned is that we do not fall in love with the veterans.. not sure if there is any economy in Bruschi being a player-coach.... maybe as a coach/spotter or something similar, but the combination may be a stretch.

Aside from the differences such as his frequent concussions and changing teams,Its almost like Zach Thomas and Bruschi have taken similar paths the past few years and their worth is dramatically low now after being so important in the middle of the D years ago.

I would say their careers have been pretty darn close to comparison without checking stats

If thats the case, I do hope Bru (when he decides to retire) mentors our young LB corp enough to merrit him a coaching job? could be a possibility. It would be great to have him on board as long as Bellichick is our Coach since he knows the system to the detail. He's on the vet backup like Seau it seems.

Well than i'm going ballistic. I think it's pretty ridiculous to say that Bruschi is less valuable than Guyton. I like guyton alot but i still feel like they're gonna split snaps. Bruschi still knows alot about the system, the opponents, how to prepare etc.
On the other hand, he's getting a bit older, so you don't play him in preseason, let him sit out training camp and when january arrives he'll be in great shape.
I don't understand why all of a sudden fans and writers are saying that he could be even cut. Just because he isn't in TC and preseason??

I'm also pretty upset, because i want to see him in action @ wembley this octobre, its my only chance to see my favorite player ever :D

I think they are throwing so many looks out there, that "starting" on defense is almost irrelevant. Think packages for situations. I think they are really going to ley mayo stretch out with various formations, and Bru will be mostly in on running downs.

I do wish we had another fast LB if we're going to run more 4-3, but maybe will be using a safety hybrid look more.

Don't really know what they're planning, but that would make sense.

I agree. They're probably going to use him on certain plays. Maybe, if they're translating their defense to a 4-3, he'll play on all 3-4 plays. How did guyton fare in the 4-3 against the eagles?

He could be cut if Lenon and the others pan out but I think his experience is worth a roster spot,he probably won't bring much else to the table except experience in real gametime situations where his smarts could overcome his somewhat loss of skills these days.

The game changing plays from ol tedy as we all know he has shown us in the past are over - its his brains to know what the offense is probably going to do and to translate it to the other LBs is what we need him for now.

MUCH to do about nothing. Bruschi is a FOURTEEN year vet who has missed almost ALL of camp. What do you expect. Only a rag like the Herald, would create another story out of thin air, and only overly rabid Pats fans would bother to comment on it.

Tell me if in 3 weeks Tedy is a back up, and what is a back up on this team, on this defense anyway. Already given the position that he plays is only going to be on the field for about 40% of the time at best, who who cares if he's on the field for the first play of the game. WHOMEVER winds up playing that position is really only a situational starter at this stage of the game

This is just Guregian's read on what he said...which was pretty standard Belichick-speak which Tedy learned to communicate in back in 2000.

“We’re in training camp right now and roles are being defined, and I know we have a lot of good inside linebackers,” Bruschi said. “I think Gary Guyton is a good player. Jerod Mayo, of course, you guys have seen what he can do. So however it is - even myself, in my 14th year, every training camp I have to look at it as I have to come in and establish a role for myself on this team, and this year is no different.”

This year is no different. And I guess Karen forgot he hasn't been an every down player for some time now and for that reason Mike Vrabel actually wore the headset and set the defense last season...

but as a player-coach Bru is still very valuable.

Yeah, I dunno about that. I'm of the opinion that his (in)ability at this point as a player and the use of a roster spot would completely outweigh any benefit. He'd be much better used on the coaching staff.

Guyton played a lot last year, so I can't see that it is that big of a suprise that he is going to again this year. People who thought we wasn't good enough were wrong IMO.

Bruschi is still a good player and will see plenty of action and will not be cut or forced to retire. Injury is the only thing I can see keeping him from contributing this year.
