Reiss Takes His Shot at the 53

Reiss knows a lot more about this than do I, but I agree with those who question the number of tackles.

But, my big disappointment is, darn, no room for Favre if he changes his mind! I mean, shouldn't he have left one slot open?

My obsverations reading this

3) Seems light on the special teamers. No Ventrone or Slater.

I didn't get to watch the game, so I couldn't check myself so I am wonder: What is the makeup of special teams right now in terms of positions? With the changes to the wedge rules there was talk of using more TEs at one point - did this materialize? If so, it could explain the reasoning behind keeping more TEs?

I have no problem with Mike's 53. I have not seen Taylor play this year so can't comment on him. If all goes to plan, I think that I would lose BJGE and keep an extra OL.

We can always pick up a RB later if needed.

You know I am not so sure exactly how the TEs fit into the STs equation that is definitely something to keep an eye on moving forward.

Based on Reiss' prediction, the special teams still have Aiken, McGowan, Woods and TBC as key players, a pretty good group. I agree though that one of wither Ventrone or Slater is likely to make the cut, not likely both.

4) I think unless Walter shows improvement in the next few weeks I might prefer 2 with Hoyer on the PS, I cant see 5 RBs, 6 WRs, and 4 TEs while ignoring OL and STs. I think the WR position could be 6 as Edelman and Aiken will be key STs (if Edelman makes it which he would seem close to a lock now but lets make sure he keeps it up). But if we 2 QBs, 4 RBs, and 3 TEs we free up 3 spots for an extra OL and 2 STs guys or keep the 3rd QB and free up 2 spots.

I think 3QBs = wasted roster spot, especially if you're talking about a ST ace like Slater or Ventrone facing a cut. I agree that Walter gets the axe, Hoyer is signed to the PS and Edelman plays the role of emergency 3rd QB.

5) Lennon would seemingly be one of the bigger cuts but with Seau willing to give some time it is kind of added depth not on the 53.

I don't see Lenon making the team. He's the 4th man in the ILB rotation, 5th if Thomas spends some time inside like he did in 2007. Given most of us expect the base 3-4 to be used less this year, it doesn't seem economical to use an extra roster spot on the position unless the guy tears it up on special teams. Do you keep Lenon over Slater? Ventrone? Likely not.

While all 4 TEs deserve to be on an NFL roster, it makes zero sense for the Pats to do it at the expense of another O-lineman. So I can see a trade of Watson, Smith or Thomas to clear up one spot. Even if you just get a 5th or 6th or something.

I can also see a trade of BJGE. Just doesn't make sense to carry him and he doesn't really cover kicks either (at least not well).

I take the STs guy over Lennon. Only reason I find it suprising is that the depth would seem light on ILBs and I think Reiss is really buying into the 4-3 much more than I am which explains it.

I had 52 of the players he chose on my list. I didn't have BJGE, but instead i put in Lenon as a ST guy. I can also see them keeping levoir. Otherwise they're very thin at tackle.
I think it's a good list, but there's still lots of preseason left to be played. Two guys who i have on my list, but i can see getting cut are Galloway and wheatley. Both were very unimpressive they're first game.

If they were gonna take another ILB, it would probably be Alexander. Good on STs and more experience in the system. Lenon missing time to injury can't help him.

He actually keeps Hotchstein. He cuts most of the pure ST only guys (Slater, Ventrone, Circiu, Alexander). However, a PS injury could allow one of these to sneak on the roster. LeKevin Smith being let go is the biggest name but if Pryor outplays him and earns it then so be it.

This also assumes Levoir and Tate on PUP which makes sense.

Just to spite everyone, Belichick will probably go with two QBs, two TEs, no fullback, and 8 WRs. :)

You're correct. He shows good hustle and aggressiveness-the 2nd was an improvement....I know he is a good player (we wouldn't have taken him in the 2nd)
I think he'll show everyone why in the next few games.

I hope you're right about that because I really like the kid. I like Wilhite very much as well. The secondary could be set for the next five or so years if they continue to improve.

If Coach B decides to do this, it won't be to spite anyone. It'll be because he believes it will be the best for the team.;)

Remember the Law, Milloy tandem? Those were great aquisitions.....

I'm w/ you on hoping Wheatley explodes. We got some excellent players in Wheatley, Wilhite, Merriweather, Mayo, Chung!!!!!!!!! Plus the vets......and Brace and Pryor....maybe we'll snag some hybrid LB's next yr in the draft:cool:

Reiss is falling in love with new and shiny and forgetting the nuts and bolts.
-- TE is nice, but you can't justify four.
-- If you can't keep four TEs, it's hard to keep five RBs.
-- Eight OL would make sense if one was a veteran T/G combo, but I'd not be trusting Brady to Vollmer if one of Light or Kac goes out, and Hochstein/Orhnberger are not subbing at T in anything but an absolute emergency. And while he was admiring Orhnberger, did he see the guys who weren't daydreaming on that play? O most likely got a 'wake-up kid, this is the NFL,' from Dante during the tape review.
-- How is Ingram the lock? Hodel took the day off so they could focus those half dozen reps on Ingram.
-- Mike keeps one Special Teams Ace, BB may surprise us, but I don't think he goes that far from his roster template.

Agreed. I can't see 6 WRs + 4 TEs + 5 RBs along with only 3 OTs. I think Levoir is a lock if healthy - he showed a lot last season.

I can't see Alexander or LeKevin Smith making the roster. I'm not convinced TBC makes it over Lenon. I can't see relying on Bruschi for much of a role. I'd like to see a way to keep Tank Williams. And I think Edelman will make it very hard to keep Slater and Ventrone.

I think the spot to keep an eye on is WR. Supposedly Nunn has been lighting up camp so I think the battle to watch is between him and Galloway.

Galloway had two drops, one for an easy TD against the Eagles.
Nunn showed rookie indecision fielding a kick but made a nice grab going to the ground.

Round one goes to Nunn IMO. Experience counts with BB but if Nunn is really a camp surprise then I think age could very well play against Galloway.

All things being equal I'd go with the young legs. The next couple of games will be interesting.

LeVoir currently is, and would be on PUP, no? Would he count against the 53 if he's on PUP?

He would not. He also would not be available in case of injuries to the other OT's for at least 7 weeks of the season.

Please re-watch the game. Banta-Cain was our top passrusher as well as being one of our top three special teamers. He is certainly more valuable than Lenon.

The open question is whether we need a fourth ILB, given how little ILB's will be on the field. My answer is yes and I would keep a 4th ILB and a 4th OT instead of a 4th TE and a 5th RB.
