I've been ripping Cutler since his "hissy fit". I've also been saying I'd prefer an accurate Orton (with a decent career record) who will play the team game instead of the gunslinger Cutler.

It's only one game, but yikes - glad I'm neither McDaniels, nor a Broncos fan. Did I understand he was 3 for 3 (three drives, three picks) ?

Egg on my face so far. Even more if the Bears show something.

Re: OT : Orton hears a "boo"

That is what I had been saying...

I'd also said that Orton was a product of a weaker supporting offensive cast and would be much better with the Broncos' line & WRs.

Three picks in three tries. Yikes. Hopefully Brady plays for another 7 years (min), cause chances are the next guy might not even be a Cassel (if some of these "starting" QBs are the template).

Hah, kudos for the title to this thread.

I'm starting to think that DJ Gallo was onto something with his evil Belichick article.

Me too. Still, it's only preseason..

Re: OT : Orton hears a "boo"

Randy Moss & Tom Brady made McDaniels think he's better than he really is. Hope he enjoys choosing between Orton & Simms. Lol.

Well, I've never been much impressed with Cutler, so I know where you are coming from.

As far as judging a QB by the first preseason game, it's WAY to early to make a judgement or even get a feel. Did you happen to catch Cassel's play in any of last year's preseason games?

Players' careers/future are not determined by one game, particulalry the first game with a new team, and most particularly in a preseason game.

I enjoyed Peyton looking like crap in his first game this year, but I draw no conclusions from it. And though I would equally enjoy watching Cutler get picked, the same applies. It doesn't count,, and he and Orton are learning a new system.

Re: OT : Orton hears a "boo"

Orton marched the ball right down the field against the 49ers on the first drive. He got baited into the interception by Nate Clemens in the end zone. On the second drive, there was either a communication issue between him and the receiver, or he just made a really lousy throw. Then, on the next drive, he didn't put enough arc on his throw and it didn't make it over a safety's jump.

It was terrible for the Broncos fans, and a perfect example of how a first exhibition game can go horribly wrong (especially when you toss in the Moreno injury), but it shouldn't be anything that can't be worked out.

On the other hand, Simms looked good against the backups, and the infamous "Quarterback controversy" could raise its ugly head if game two doesn't go better for Orton.

No need to fall on the old sword after one preseason game. I don't know what Orton will do, but I'm not sold on Cutler. There's a lot of hype there for a guy who's started maybe 30 games and has a Pass Rating in the mid 80's.

Niners edge Broncos in preseason game - The Denver Post

First a comment about McDaniels:

It's difficult to believe a coaching career getting off to a more challenging start than what McDaniels has endured in his first few months with the Broncos.

Why not throw in a full-fledged quarterback controversy? While Orton threw for the turnover trifecta in the first half, Simms was effective in the second half, leading the Broncos to a touchdown and field goal on his first two drives.

Then there's this assessment on Orton:

It was one of those days for Orton. Chris Simms played better. But then so did Tom Brandstater, who didn't play.

Re: OT : Orton hears a "boo"

We'll see what happens. I'm still hoping Cutler falls on his face (are we allowed to wish bad things on others here ?) and Orton gets a few good games in - just so my previous posts make me sound semi-bright.

I just can't get past the me-myself-I Cutler attitude. Does he strike you as someone who spends more time at the bar or in the film room?

Yes. Accurate assessment.

The first 2 picks were forced throws on his part (especially the second one!). You've called the 3rd one right.

Also, a disturbing part of his game is, he doesn't seem to know when it's expedient to throw the ball away. They have a killer schedule, and knowing when to do that could prove quite useful.

Just my $.02....

Disagree

I think he is going to be a great coach. He changed the most of the offense last year after TB12 went down.

Re: OT : Orton hears a "boo"

If Mcdaniels is installing the similar system as we have with all the option routes and everything which I assume he is than they could be in for a tough stretch. Think of the individuals who have come in here and talked about its complexities...shoot it looks like it is taking 15 year vet Galloway a tough time to get it down.

Over there McD has to install it with a blank slate to everyone. I wouldn't read to much into early pre-season mistakes heck some of those mistakes will likely carry over to the regular season too.

I think both McD and Orton deserve a little bit time to figure it out....Problem is the way McD came in guns blazing trying get Cassell and getting rid of Cutler he really created a hot seat for himself and the QB position.

That's OK - Galloway has Edelman to teach him.....:D.

I do think Mcdaniels will do very ewell - he has a terrific football mind and learned from the best.

Not really. From a Reiss article, we used just as much shot gun and 3-WR sets with Cassel as we did with Brady the year before.

Kyle Orton 3-int's in the first half is pretty much the worst-case scenario to get Broncos fans on board with the new program.

McDaniels is doing an excellent job doing what I knew he could do; he's exceeding my expectations in how fast he's doing it.

But that doesn't mean they were running the exact same plays. It seems like they reigned in the offense quite a bit for Matt Cassel. This isn't a knock against Cassel, mind you. It took Brady years to earn the responsibilities he currently has on the offense. With Cassel I saw alot less signaling at the line - which leads me to believe he had less control over the offense. Maybe less option routes to worry about per play, or fewer progressions to go through, or less playcalling at the LOS.

Re: OT : Orton hears a "boo"

Watching Bills-Bears now. Cutler looked pretty crappy.

I think Simms will end up being the man for the Broncos.
