Could we see some players traded before they get waived?

I happened across an interesting point somewhere: If anyone wants players from the Pats VERY deep roster, they'll have to trade unless they know KC doesn't want them.

I wonder if we'll see some guys get shipped out for late round picks before we get to see them cut?

There certainly should be a player or two traded for the somewhat traditional 6th, if the player makes the 53.

As far as real trades, the team will try. I would think that there may be interest in Watson if we are ready to keep Wendy. Also there might be interest in Smith or Green.

I firmly believe that this will happen. BB would certainly like to direct players he feels he doesnt need to teams he wont be competing against AND gather additional draft choices in the process.

Precisely. Since Pioli knows the players and has a top waiver spot to scoop up value, other teams with needs that appear on the Pats >53 roster will need to offer most likely a conditional pick. Teams after Denver with specific needs have to get by the Josh McD hurdle as well. This increases the market potential for Pats castoffs. However, as others have said, BB would probably rather let KC get a guy than have say Indy pick up an OL with potential. I don't expect much but there is a stronger probability of a low round trade than usually.

If they can get a conditional pick for Gorin (that they never got because he didn't make the roster - if I remember correctly), surely they should get something for the 54,55,56...

This isn't as easy to do as you think. All 32 teams would like to trade the

players they are going to cut for late round draft picks. Other teams have

a good idea as to the players who are on the bubble with the Patriots.

biggest potential I would think is jarvis green with warren, wilfork, seymour, wright, brace already here, his $$ seems to not be good value.........since he is gone in a year anyway, it would seem that a 6th spot is better off being one out of the group smith, pryor, richard

FWIW, though, remember that players who, if released, would be unrestricted free agents do NOT go through waivers; they're immediately free to sign with anyone.

It all depends on the player I suppose. IIRC, the Pats managed to land a 7th from Pittsburgh for Patrick Cobbs when he was an undrafted rookie. I would imagine that a younger, bubbly player like David Thomas or BJGE could be worth something.

I should have added the other reason why teams might still trade for a player who doesn't need to clear waivers—to ensure that they get a player they want/need. So, Thomas and BJGE could be worth picks, as could an older player like Watson.

I disagree. The dropoff from Green to whomever would make the roster instead of him is worth more than a low draft pick in my opinion.

Stated differently, I would rather keep Green even if it is for just one more year and increase our shot at a Championship than to pawn him off for a 4th or 5th round draft pick next year that may not even make the team anyway.

Remember that we gave up a 4th rounder for Washington and he was a big factor in us going all the way. He then left in FA, yet looking back on it, I consider the trade to have been a very good one for the Patriots.

IMO, in the zest for squeezing out every last ounce of draft potential, we can sometimes lose site of the bigger picture.

I agree. Green would have to be able to be traded for something of serious value, as right now he's a solid player and knows the system well.

It's possible and I've considered it trying to forecast where a likely trade might develop, for example: KC needs OL help pretty badly, the question becomes who does NE have who could help them and can NE spare them? Take Tackle:
-- Light & Kaczur are starters.
-- Vollmer is a developmental project.
-- LeVoir is on PUP and played very well last season as a swing tackle (remember BB talking about how hard that is to do).
-- Britt has played swing tackle, though he was beaten out by LeVoir, but with LeVoir on PUP Britt is on the roster.
-- O'Callaghan has started, but only because Kaczur was rehabbing at the start of the season. He was getting developmental reps in games until he got his bell rung by Urlacher his rookie year, he's seen very limited use since then and his value isn't high for trade.
-- Bussey is a likley looking four position player, but unproven as a 5th round pick in his rookie season.

Who does NE trade to a tackle needy team? If I was someone like KC I'd trust my OL coach to take UDFA talent and develop them before I'd invest a draft pick there.

Green or Le Kevin Smith get tossed out frequently, yet there are 10 DL in camp weighing in 285+; NE keeps 6-7 DL on the roster and 1-2 on the PSquad, so 7-9 of the 10 will be needed right here in NE (and I'd keep 9). Trade bait? Someone better cough up the sugar.

There are really no spare DBs, WR after the first two have no clear trade market, TE might be an option, RB is thin, QB is thin, LB is thin, there is no market for the interior OL... It's just hard to see the trade value out there.

More importantly, they're drafted rookies and thus essentially untradeable (unless you get another rookie drafted around the same slot or below in return)

What would some of you put the odds on Watson making the team either way traded or cut? One of the only positions the Ravens are thin at is TE and we could use him.

I remember him coming out, freak athlete who looked like he could really be a difference maker. Has the scheme of the offense just limited his production or is it something else?

I know he has battled nagging injuries almost every year and his hands might be a little suspect, but I didn't see the Pats cutting him until I read the cbs sportsline report.

What have been the issues with him?

IMO you might be able to get a 6th for him but not much more. Many teams try to trade players at this point before they cut him but it usually never happens and his production is such that he probably does not have a lot of value.

I'd be surprised if he didn't make the roster. If he's cut or traded, I'd look first to Kansas City who wouldn't mind another receiver with whom Cassel is comfortable, the Ravens would be bidding against that relationship.

True, although, ahem, a fifth-rounder might do it. . . . :D

Might happen with a couple of players but odd are against it happening often.

First, the team has to decide that the player is better than who they have on their team that they would cut, and so much better he is worth a draft pick. It is not the better part as much as so much better....and we aren't talking starters here, we are talking about upgrading your 3rd QB or upgrading your 5th wideout, or 4th RB, etc.

Second the team has to figure out if they are going to be able to get the player without a trade. If you are the Steelers---maybe not, if anyone else is interested. But the Steelers are pretty stocked as well. If you are KC good chance you can grab him off the waivers (unless the Lions want him too)

Same here... even if he WERE to walk for nothing (other than a comp. pick)... who cares if he contributes to something special ?
