In 2008 he registered 49 tackles and four sacks while starting every game for the Buccaneers. After the 2008 season Carter became a free agent. Carter earned $8.7 million in his two seasons with the Bucs.

I'm not sure I get why this guy is on the radar, though.

#2- serious injury to a current player in camp
#3- trade/ cut Green
#4- If his intent is to keep 8 DLs, doenst any other of the remaining kids in camp

BB is just covering the bases and managing his risk.

I thought there was a possibility that Green could get traded this preseason. So that is a possibility. I think with Seymour not practicing and Warren on PUP, Belichick may be getting a contingency plan. Also, he just likes to rotate d-linemen to keep them fresh anyway.

But it's not disconcerting to know that there is an alternative available and BB isn't sticking his head in the sand hoping the team will be fine as is. Maybe BB won't go after him, but I feel better knowing that he's sticking to the way he does things. How many times has he said "if there's a player available who makes this team better, we'll look into it." (paraphrasing). But I know what you're saying that it sucks that there alway seems to be someone hurt even after a long period of rest.

As far as LeKevin- maybe he will get cut. I think the big strike against Green isn't his ability, it's his cap hit. Sign Carter, cut Green, extend Brady, extend/restructure Wilfork... could happen. :confused2: Better yet- trade Green for a 3rd round pick (or even a 4th and a 5th) and lessen the trade implications from Burgess.

He is a DE. Ty Warren has not practiced once. RIchard Seymour was in the morning practice of day one, then missed the afternoon practice and every practice since then.

There is no reason to expect Le Kevin Smith or any other veteran DL to be cut. It's also a bit early to be considering a trade of any DL. Ty Warren is on PUP, Pryor has been missing time since cap started with a nick or three, and Darryl Richard just started practicing. Sey being nicked up doesn't help either. Brace can be expected to platoon at a couple different positions, but like Warren and Wilfork before him, he'll be brought along at an easy pace to help him learn the techniques and defense without overwelming or burning him out.

Translation: Kevin Carter is insurance, experience, and hopefully another ring hungry veteran.

I don't either and I have no idea why people keep suggesting that. Even if we cut Jarvis, we would still have to absorb a cap hit. Why in the world would we do that when we could just wait until next year, let him ride into the sunset (probably New Orleans), and not have to pay cent?

I don't understand how someone can talk about Seymour/Warren injuries in one sentence and suggest that Green will be cut in the next. This defense is built around the line. Should either starting DE start the season on PUP, the defense will surving. Should both starting DEs miss significant playing time, the defense is screwed. A defensive line of Green/Wilfork/Carter, while not elite, is still pretty solid.

Another way to look at it: one of the beauties of running a 3-4 is that rushing the pass is not the primary responsibility of the linemen. The system values strength and smarts over speed, which means that older linemen can be effective later into their careers. Look at Bobby Hamilton, Ted Washington, Jason Furguson, Jeff Zgonia, Vonnie Holliday, Keith Traylor, etc. A guy like Carter probably has lost a couple of steps, but that won't necessarily show in the Patriots system.

People who suggest that Green should be cut do not understand the cap and how cap numbers come to be.

They see $5 mil cap #!!!!! Yeow! He ain't worth it.

They don't realize that his salary is about $2 mil, not $5 mil. That a good part of the cap came from money already paid him for salary the last two years. The Pats simply paid him but didn't have that money reflect on the cap until this year. Teams do it all the time.

Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I can understand converting salary to signing bonus and how it benefits both player and team, at the cost of confusing lazy sports writers and the casual fans who listen to them.

BOX - If the Patriots haven't paid Green his Roster Bonus, then they would free up 4.8 million by cutting/trading him. If Green has earned his bonus, then the Pats would free up only about 2.5 million. It all depends on when the roster bonus is/was scheduled to be paid. Its one of the things that Miguel isn't sure on.

I agree with this... I think that Carter could be an excellent addition to the Pats... Particularly on 3rd down packages.
