Re: Herald Article By Karen G. Today- Huh?

Am I the only one sick of "journalists" making off the cuff remarks about a player and not backing it up with any examples. It just seems like lazy journalism to me. I think if you say something derogatory about someone you should back it up. For example So and so is a lazy player and heres an example: Too often the journalists in this town become the story.

Karen's not the worst. Unfortunately you have to give the editor a story EVERY day, even when there isn't one. This shouldn't be news to anyone who has followed the media here for very long.

At any rate these stories and most posts are full of SPECULATION, and all too often this speculation tends to be reported as FACT.

Here are the simple facts. The Pats felt that Walter would be better than Gutts. At the end of camp the 2 or 3 best QBs will remain on the roster. One of them will be Tom Brady. Hoyer will most likely end up being on the PS. The rest will be decided by who plays best from here on out.

BTW- NEVER take too much to heart how many snaps one player is getting over another over a short period of time. There are lots of reasons why the coaches are giving snaps to one player or another. If you have gone to practice the last 2 days, you would leave sure that JEdelman is a starter.....Trust me....HE ISN'T. But for this small period of camp, he is getting the opportunity to work with the first group in SOME of the personell packages. Is it coaches decision? Is it because others aren't practicing? We can only guess, and when we do, our "guesses" sometimes become concidered facts. ;)

Sanity at last!

I enjoy his insights that are based on what he hears a lot more than his bs about what he knows. The planet does strange things to some, and in his case it's been a real mixed bag...

What's his take - what he hears or what he thinks he knows - on Hoyer?

I guess you're not subscribed to BB's insider e-mails, where he talks about his thoughts about who's going to make the 53 and who isn't. It also includes injury updates. ;)

I don't recall Matt ever being thought of as earning a number 2 spot. He was constantly the weakest link. As I recall wasnt Testerverde the number 2 Matts 2nd and 3rd year?
Hmmm. I think you're wrong on all three counts.

I don't agree with that. MC was a pleasant surprise since the day he showed up at his 1st camp. There were all kinds of reports about this kid who never even played in college looking the part on the Patriots practice field.

Then MC played pretty well in his first couple of preseasons. He didn't appear to be a weak link until the 2008 preseason. Up until then he had always looked good.

The team brought in Flutie in 05 (MC's rookie year) to be #2 but MC was #2 every year after that. In the 2005 season finale against Miami, Cassel played well in relief of Brady and nearly led a late comeback that was derailed when they missed a 2 pt conversion to end the game (which may have been intentional since I doubt BB wanted to go into OT with their first playoff game the next week.

Testeverdee was never #2. It was more of a gimmick thing to give him a shot to be part of the team. He was cut after the 06 training camp and then resigned late in the year so he could enjoy the playoff run. MC was always the #2 though.

In fact, one of the reasons Flutie cited for retiring was the fact that, by the end of the season, Cassel had already beaten him out for the #2 spot.

In the 2005 season finale against Miami, Cassel played well in relief of Brady and nearly led a late comeback that was derailed when they missed a 2 pt conversion to end the game (which may have been intentional since I doubt BB wanted to go into OT with their first playoff game the next week.

Actually, his motivation was even stronger than that. At the time, the playoff seeding looked like this:

1 Indianapolis Mannings
2 Denver Donkeys
3 Cincinnati Bengals(!)
4 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
5 Jacksonville Jaguars
6 Pittsburgh Squealers

In any case, if Cincinnati lost its Week 17 game, and New England won against the LOLphins, the Patriots would have moved up to the 3 spot—which meant that the Pats would get the Steelers for their wild card matchup.

IIRC, it became pretty darn clear that Cincinnati was sandbagging that day ("Here, New England, have the #3 seed; we don't mind!"); BB was not amused. As a result, Cassel "mysteriously" overthrew that final 2-point conversion attempt. If BB really had wanted to win that game, a little OT wouldn't have stopped him.
