Gutierrez cut, Andrew Walter signed

Here's how I see veteran QBs and the Pats:

Let say that at any time there are maybe two dozen quarterbacks who are solid NFL-caliber starters. After them come another two dozen borderline guys who all feel, legitimately, they should be able compete for a starting spot. In any given year, only a handful of those borderline guys are available as UFAs.

If you're one of those handful of guys, what job do you aim for? One where you'd have the best shot at earning the starting job. So a team like the Patriots with an elite QB simply isn't going to get a quality veteran backup.

BB has tried a variety of workarounds to cope with this: the injured (Miller, Redman) and the geriatric (Testaverde, Flutie), along with a steady stream of rookies. But by and large, if the rookies don't develop as hoped you're always going to be looking at the dregs of the veteran pool.

Re: Matt Gutierrez cut. Andrew Walter signed.

I love Waltah!!!!!

oh wait what sport are we talking about.

Its offical it is Andrew Walter.. Good back up, will compete with Hoyer IMO.. I hope this brings the final end to the Idiotic Mike Vick talk... Also what does it tell Mike Vick when a guy that Randy Moss was bored with in Oakland gets signed before him?? Go to the UFL Mike..

Re: Matt Gutierrez cut. Andrew Walter signed.

So, Guitierrez: KC, Cleveland or Denver?

I say Denver. :)

Well, I must say, encouraging that it was Guttz and not Hoyer to get the bump. I have never been impressed with Guttz; be interesting to see what Hoyer can do.

How long before the Chiefs sign Gutz lol.

I'm not a Gutz guy, but this may say more about O'Connell than Hoyer.

Re: Matt Gutierrez cut. Who's in?

There's a rumor (made up by me this very second) that Michael Vick is in Boston right now, and will be driving to Gillette to sign a multi-year contract with the Patriots.

I'm going to go ahead and confirm that rumor and add this picture that I took at practice today with my camera phone.

Depends on your POV. I didn't think Gutz had any real shot at #2, that KOC pretty much had it locked down. Gutz was fighting for #3, thus I think it reflects better on Hoyer as he is playing for that spot as well.

I should have explained myself better. If the team thinks O'Connell's ready, it makes sense to keep Gutz/Hoyer in the mix even though they've never played in the NFL. If the team thinks O'Connell's not really there, it makes more sense to pull in a veteran in case Brady goes down for a game or two.

At least that's one way I thought of to look at this. I have a hard time thinking that the team was really panicked about Gutz as the #3 option at this early stage of camp.

Judging players from the Raiders is tough... their coaching is so bad that even decent players can look terrible.

This guy is a tree. He's actually taller than Brady.

IMO he's as much a reclaimation project as Gutierrez was and this says little about O'Connell's #2 spot. At least with Walter the Pats aren't having to fix both arm strength and the mental aspect.

He fits the recent profile. The Pats are pretty much shopping for 6'5", 230 lb. guys for the position. Sorry Hoyer...

Agree except if <unthinkable situation that shall not be mentioned> happens early in the season, O'Connell may not be mentally ready for the grind of an entire season. For a short-term deal, I would think O'Connell stays #2 unless he plays his way out of it.

Walter has a lot of positives but his horrific decision-making has killed his development. I'm not ready to blame all that on the Raiders so Walter immediately becomes a point of interest in the preseason games.

At least Walter had a good college career with a big name team.

He was projected as a first round choice before he injured his

shoulder in his senior year. Before you criticize Walter too much,

remember Moss was projected as all washed up.

Walters biggest issue was he was rushed to the field before he was ready on a very poor team.
Some QBs never overcome that, others do when they are given a chance to learn in the right environment.

Then, Russell was drafted and Walter was forgotten.

That's the way even the Lemon interest read for me, too. They probably have reason to think they need a little something more behind KOC than Gutz could provide. If KOC was wowing them out of the gate then Gutz is sufficient behind him. Lemon may have priced himself out of their market on the heels of Jackson getting dinged in Minnesota, too.

Gotta figure they got some insight on Walter from Randy. Kid played well in college taking AZ to a bowl game, but he suffered a shoulder seperation before that game that dropped his stock pre draft. Still he went early in the third. Just landed in a true black hole. It's pretty difficult to break bad habits, but he's been in Oakland the entire time so at least it's not like he's shellshocked from bouncing around the league. Maybe a restart in this environment will yield dividends. If not maybe they kick some real veteran tires, like Griese before the season commences.

If we have our former iron man back at starter it will be academic who the #2 and #3 are anyway.

Raiders Reject √
NFL Experience √
Game Manager √

Hes got a legit chance to lock up the third spot on the depth chart and push for the second, the question is how will he translate from a reject to a quality backup. Hes got the tools around him now we'll have to see how he can utilize them. Here's to Gutz being signed by the Broncos or Chiefs! :eat3:

Did something happen to KOC in the offseason? He was the No. 2 all last year. Now he isn't capable? Wha hoppened?

Edit: Actually KOC wasn't No. 2 all year. He was No. 3 for the first seven minutes of game one :D

Games Started: 9

INTs: 16
Fumbles: 15
Sacks: 51

Well, that's something.

Walters, Gutz (apparently not), Bishop, Davey, whoever.......I don't care and I pray to god its a moot point.

If anyone not named Brady is playing a meaningful snap this season, it will be crushing. I really could care less who is holding the clipboard.
