Ian's Daily Blog - Friday was a wild one in New England after various media outlets had erroneously reported that Michael Vick was in Foxboro for a workout. That ended up not being the case, with Vick reportedly instead spending the day in a Virginia federal bankruptcy court. There are those who won’t rule it out, including head coach [...]

Re: Vick Signing With Patriots Doesn?t Make Sense ? For Vick

There's a lot of teams out there for whom Vick would be an upgrade.

What better way to drive his price down to join the chorus of teams saying they don't want him, only to swoop in at the end and get him cheap?

I say let's cut Brady and sign Vick straight up for a 6 year $67.5 million dollar contract!

Vick will be playing in the UFL this season. Heres why... UFL offering Vick a 7 digit contract compared to the NFL that will give him a 6 digit contract!! Problem solved.

When it comes right down to it, does Vick give the Patriots a better chance to win? If so where and how much does he play? If Edelman
Is going to see reps as a Wildcat QB, is that a place that Vick could play? Sure but does he want to?

I firmly believe what is fueling all this talk is the perception that from a rehabilitation standpoint only this is certainly the best place for Vick to land. Even Rodney said so. The veteran atmosphere, the coaching, the winning. It's probably the best place in the league for any genuinely talented athlete to land for that matter, even if he isn't remarkably troubled, with few exceptions for strict scheme fit. The only problem is Vick doesn't provide anything that substantially benefits this team in return, on or off the field. He's not remotely a fit for this offensive scheme, he is it's anthesis, and that fit is not a skillset you can teach or coach. You're either born with capacity (which they can of course nurture and develop to it's fullest) or you aren't. Bill admires ultra talented athletes, but he excels at making the most out of intuative, disciplined, driven and reasonably talented football players to whom winning matters. Bob Kraft is a compassionate and caring and business savvy owner from whom Vick could learn a lot. He is also in the process of establishing a football themed retail mall in an out of the way location in a down economy, as Tom Curren attempted to note in the midst of the fray yesterday. The last thing he needs is a pariah on the payroll.

And that's another problem, priorities. Vicks revolve around re-establishing himself financially via an NFL career after already losing upwards of a quarter of a billion in contract and endorsements. Even as his league appointed guardian's seem to revolve around re-establishing himself with his family. While players all want to win on some level, for the vast majority their money and security come first. In that respect Vick is just another Joe looking to ink an 8 figure per year QB deal that will span a decade. He tells his bankruptcy judge that every time he sees him...he's expecting to play another 10 years in a $10M a year position. Per his bankruptcy proceedings, on the morning of the day he surrendered to begin his sentence he went on a shopping spree that totaled over $200K. The largest ticket item was a $99K Mercedes added to his existing stable of several luxury vehicles. His excuse for tapping into his posse's retirement fund, something also uncovered as a result of his bankruptcy filing, even after being told it was illegal to, was he needed money. Anyone who honestly believes this clown is sorry for anything other than the mess he made of his own situation probably also believes the UFL has an icebergs chance in hell of succeeding.

So on a football or a business level Vick makes no sense here. And he makes little sense elsewhere in the NFL. His return is being driven by 360 degree sports media spin. The same media who said he'd never be indicted. Then said he'd never do a day in prison. Then said after reading the littany of crimes he pled guilty to and the sentence he received as a result, he was finished in the league as anything beyond a novelty. The same media who always care more about the story than it's implications. They drove the Vick train back because it provides them with a compelling story. Michael Vick is good for the media. Doesn't matter that he's no good for the NFL to the point they need to attempt to drive the Vick train into Foxboro to sell the idea that BB will fix that and make him good for all mankind...

I didnt think i could hate Mike Vick anymore, but the drive by media is making it possible..

Only if he wants a ring

Vick should play in the UFL. They end by Thanksgiving and he can prove he still has "it." By then the protestors will thin out a bit, some team like SF might decide their QBs are crap and decide to give him a shot.

And he got paid.

What about the Vick we don't know about? It wouldn't be much of a stretch to assume that he still owes money to the so-called dog mafia or owes favors to some powerful interstate crime ring. Certainly he possesses information that they would consider sensitive to their continued illegal activities. Talk about distractions.

he would b a sick qb for an urban meyer type offense

Robert Kraft confirmed Vick is not in pats' plan. He probably wanted to stop the rampant speculation that Pats are signing Vick.

I must say Bill brought these attentions ...don't understand why he played coy and vague on this in the first place... why not just say we don't need him... national media had a field day speculating pats' interest in Vick. To them it stands for the lack of scruple and lack of principle that Bill B would do anything to get an edge.

Sometimes Bill is trying to be TOO smart. He needs to understand Pats could use some good PR and image. Kraft being a shrewd business man undnerstands this. Bill is all about misinformation. Granted, he is a better coach than 90% of his peers. By stop this cleverness of being evasive. Really all his success can be traced to two men: Parcells and Brady. What has he done without these two? I would have a better time rooting for my pats if we did not have such a sully head coach.

I always look at BB as the "mad scientist" who likes to see what could be done with the anomolous talent in the league. Vick is the the epitome of that and I'm hard pressed to believe BB wouldn't be slightly curious as to how he could utilize a guy with Vick's talents.

I'm curious! I'd be pretty psyched if we gave him a looksee.

I go back forth between the thought you just mentioned and what Kraft said on the radio basically why take the ball out of Brady's hand.

WOW so what have Parcell's and Brady done without such a sully head coach (whatever that is...)...

What we have here lately is a plethora of sully headed posters, I fear. Should make for another pissa season on the message board regardless of where Vick signs and what this team accomplishes.

I am more concerned that we need some good image and PR. So when we do win the next SB, people in media won't be so lopsided against us. It's not an accident he is voted as one of the most hated person in sports history. People hate us so much despite good citizens like Brady and Bruschi. We had a perfect season ruined and media broke a false but fateful story on the eve of the SB. I don't think it is an co-incidence. How BB acted and treated people over the time had a lot to do with these bad breaks coming back at the most inopportune times.

Vick is a bad dude; he has no place on a team with the ultimate ambition. We need not only to win, but win with class and dignity. Vick is none of these.

You reap what you saw. Be a good citizen and people will root for you. You get too full of yourself and too smart and uncoorperative (read Bill) and the bad breaks will be against you. You will get the bad calls at the worst of times. Period. It's Karma.

Trust me when I say this as it's coming from a lifelong Gator fan... not really.

If it wasn't for BB, we wouldn't have 3 Championships. I think last season proved that BB can do it without Brady if he had to. Cassell came on slower than we would have liked though. That, combined with some DB issues, cost us a shot last year. I think we had a shot last year if we had made the playoffs.

Just the same, Brady is deserving of the credit you give him. Parcells is not. While I give him credit (along with Mr. Kraft and Bledsoe) of being a key figure in turning our franchise fortunes around, he had his shot at a Championship and blew it. Not only did he blow it, but he pulled his best Bennedict Arnold impersonation while doing so.

Kraft and Belichick should be on your short list along with Brady as key figures making the Patriots what they are today.
