The spotlight was on the Chargers and they talked about how well the Chargers would do this season. Anyways, Trey Wingo asks the question, "...but how will the Chargers be able to contend with the likes of the Patriots, Steelers and the Colts?" Can you figure it out why that question is stupid? The Colts shouldn't even be in the question because the Chargers have bounced the Colts out of the playoffs two years in a row. The question should have been, "Do the Chargers have enough to get past the Steelers or Patriots?"
Also, why do people still insist that the Colts are some kind of a threat to other teams in the NFL? In the last two season's, the Colts have been one and done in the postseason. I said it before and I'll say it again, the Colts are done. The only thing that keeps the Pats out of the super bowl is injuries. I just wanted to share some stupidity from ESPN.

Mostly the effect of star power and partly the influence of fantasy football on fan's perceptions I suppose. Think back to 2001 when nobody (i.e, fans led by media hype) could understand how the Pats beat the Rams, or 2006 when the Pats beat the Chargers and all their Pro Bowlers in San Diego. Colts have all that "star power", led by Manning, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Dwight Freeney, etc. On the other hand while the Chargers have very recognizable names all the fantasy football owners who selected Tomlinson think he and his team stinks after the 2008 season.

To casual fans the Colts are a huge powerhouse because they won the Super Bowl a couple years ago and Peyton Manning is one of the two most recognized names in the NFL. Their business model is geared more to drawing in those casual fans based on the belief the die hards will watch no matter what, and those casual fans are the key to increasing ratings. Frustrating for NFL fans like you and me, but I'm guessing that's why they make so many dumb comments like that one.

because we havent seen/heard enough?

Outside of Colin Cowturd, I refuse to have anything to do with espn. Only reason i listen to Colin, is because he has some serious manlove for BB, and the whole organization. :D

That show new show that Colin Cowherd has Sportsnation sucks bad. What an awful show.

Dismissing the Colts b/c of the reasons you listed is almost as dumb as fans who dismiss the Patriots for "statistically" being the oldest team in the league.

The Colts beat us last year (yes we had a chance to win, but didn't), played us very tough in 2007, and based on the way we played the Chargers in the AFC title game, may have beaten us then. As long as Manning is there, you have to respect them.

It may not seem like a good question, but the Colts and the Chargers both are on downward spirals so anything could happen with them...

The Colts will always be a threat as long as they have Manning, just as the Pats will always be a threat as long as they have Brady.

I think you're underestimating Indy. They might have been bounced by the Chargers back to back years, but the 07 Colts team was a beast. Consider that our 07 squad was one of the best teams fielded in history and that the 07 Colts was pretty near our level throughout that season.

I think you guys are missing the origional point.

Why is anyone contemplating the Chargers "competing" with the Colts when the Chargers have bounced them the past two seasons.

How can the Colts compete with the Chargers is the real question.

Thank you, somebody gets it.

Alright, since Workhorse and none of the other Colts fans have responded, I'll play the role of the devils advocate. While the Chargers have indeed ended the Colts season in the playoffs the last two years, it is not as if Indy can't beat San Diego - they did exactly that on the road last year in week 12. And as I recall there were many fans here who were convinced the Colts would never beat the Pats in the playoffs based on the final scores between those teams prior to the 2006 AFCCG; just because the Chargers won those last two playoff games that is no guarantee they will win again in the next meeting. It's not like San Diego has been blowing out the Colts either; the margin of victory in those two Charger playoff wins was less than a touchdown in both games.

Thanks for saving me the time of having to type all that out. Every year is different.

There other items to include. Peyton is not coming off 2 knee surgeries this year. Their Defensive Tackle rotation will have 3 guys that weigh 50 pounds more that the guys that were starting much of last year. They added another 1st running back into the fold in Donald Brown.

My hopes for this season are high. As long as they can stay healthy I think they will do well.

The Reason the Chargers must be able to beat the Patriots, Steelers and Colts is the following:

Steelers
Patriots
Colts
Steelers
Patriots
Patriots

Those are your last Six AFC Winners. I don't see Chargers anywhere in that list. That is the reason they must be better than all 3 of those teams.

I think your missing the point. The Colts have been beat twice in a row by the hands of the Chargers in the playoffs. Obviously, the Chargers have shown they can beat the Colts, that's why they shouldn't be considered in the question.

Dude your logic is flawed. The Colts beat the Patriots last time they matched up in the playoffs. So using your logic, the Colts have shown they can beat the Patriots and the Patriots shouldn't be included in conversations similarly.

This has nothing to do with the Pats and Colts. But if you want to go there, the Pats still lead the Colts in recent playoff match ups 2-1. Nice try though. Oh yeah, the Colts will be one and done again this season.

Yes, the Chargers have beaten the Colts twice in a row in the playoffs, and have lost to the Pats twice and Steelers once.

However, the reason the Colts are mentioned is because they did in fact go all the way and win it all. You could actually consider the Chargers on the same level as the Titans, Ravens and Jaguars. Teams that make the playoffs often but can't quite finish the job.

There only saying that 'cause they dont got much material to work with on the AFC of power teams. They add more to make the list more interesting, but it dont hold any water.

I don't interpret the question quite the same as everyone else. The question is simply "can the Chargers beat the three teams that will likely be waiting for them in the post season this year?" Since the Pats, Steelers and Colts all consistently make the playoffs, and chances are high that the Chargers will have to get past them, the question is relevant regardless of whether the Chargers have beaten the Colts the past 2 times or not. It's from the Chargers perspective, remember.

Were we not beating you after 3 quarters two years ago in the Dome (without Harrison, Gonzalez, or Ugoh)? U serious with this crap that the Colts aren't a threat?

And what does this make, the 5th year in a row that the Colts are done? :p
