The Panthers are bringing in a productive pass-rusher for a workout later this week, one of the most bizarre stories of the fall.

Former sixth-round pick Stryker Sulak, a DE from Missouri, will fly to Charlotte Thursday night and work out for the Panthers Friday, per his agent.
Sulak's working out for New England today, and has received interest from "at least 10 other teams" according to agent Bob Lattinville.

The Raiders chose Sulak 199th overall (two spots before they traded for the Panthers sixth), but released him before ever signing him. Partly, that's because they signed Greg Ellis to go with an already good group of rushers.

"He'd be a fine addition for any team," Lattinville said. "And there's no lack of motivation, that's for sure."

I had a feeling about this when I heard about the Raiders cutting him. Wouldn't it be EXTRA blissful to see him come here and play well?

expected at least a workout when he was cut. We will see what happens

The Patriots may still get a linebacker complements of the

Oakland Raiders.

Would be hilariously ironic if he signed with us, considering they acquired that pick in a trade with NE on draft day. Hey, maybe he turns into the next #199 to take the league by storm. :p

I wonder if Ingram's worried about this.

Re: Stryker Sulak (DE/OLB) works out for Pats.

The more I read up about this kid, the more he sounds like a good PS guy. He's got good size and speed, was a pretty decent pass-rusher in college, and is slowly learning how to play in coverage. He's behind all our other conversion guys, but there's no harm in developing young talent. I wouldn't complain in the least if we signed him.

Question for the capologists out there: how would signing him affect our rookie pool? If it comes down to it, would we have to choose between, say, him or Ingram? Interesting questions to to consider.

if he signs, and if he turns into a good lb.......that would be epic lol

I would fear for the health of Al Davis if that happened.

If he was drafted and then released before signing a contract, wouldn't he be a FA. I don't think he would count against the rookie pool.

Sulak was originally covered by Oakland's rookie salary cap allocation.
Now, he has been waived and was not claimed. I wonder if the
rookie salary cap still applies to him and whether the allocation goes
from one team to another?

Your answer might be the correct answer.

Seriously - they draft him and cut him... what's going on there ? And how did they win more games than the Lions ?

Released by the Raiders, I think he will be a ProBowler for the Patriots within 2 seasons :D

Great point because signing Sulak would count against rookie pool.

I think Sulak would be a solid addition and good competition at OLB. No doubt he was a terrific pass rusher/playmaker in college, he finished 2nd in Mizzou history with 22.5 sacks and also forced 14 fumbles. Only Brandon Williams and Brian Orakpo had more sacks in the Big 12 last yr. We do need playmakers/pass rushers from the edge. He doesn't have to be a full-time player in his first year, he could be a situational rusher until he is comfortable playing OLB full time. Could also play on special teams.

He still hasn't signed? Do we have a holdout? Who'd a thought it would be a long snapper!?!?!?!

I stand corrected, he would not count towards rookie pool since he's already cleared waivers:

Latinville said he expects Sulak to clear waivers seeing that most teams probably won't have any leftover money from their rookie pool to sign a sixth-round draft pick.

Since the Pats didn't draft him but rather signed him as a FA, my guess is that only his signing bonus would count, same as the other rookie FAs they signed this year after the draft was over. But I really don't know, and it is always dangerous to apply logic to a negotiated agreement (CBA).

I corrected myself. He will not count towards the rookie pool since he cleared waivers.
