Reiss has it as official...not a large surprise about Spann...he was facing long odds...not a biggie...

Re: Chung in Spann gone...a BIT of a surprise..but....

This is a good thing. Spann was a fringe player and PS guy. Whenever he was playing meaningful minutes with the regular defense, it meant that the secondary was in trouble and was scraping the bottom for help. That Spann was cut at the start, indicates that the unit has improved in the eyes of the staff.

Re: Chung in Spann gone...a BIT of a surprise..but....

I liked Spann. He performed well in training camp last year, and played hard on special teams. Chung represents a significant upgrade, however, and I'm excited about the possibilities. Keep in mind that Spann made the squad last year. Our overall talent level has risen dramatically.

Best of luck to Spann as he navigates his post-Patriots career.

Let's gamble on Spann's landing spot. Who says Denver ? Who says Cleveland ?

Yep -- and I wouldn't say this is about Chung so much as McGowan, Williams and Ventrone. Also interesting that Jamar Love stuck ahead of Spann. Love is a tremendous athlete, could be an interesting PS prospect.

So who's left at safety?
BM, Chung, Sanders, McGowan, Ventrone, Williams

IMO Tank Williams will be a LB not a safety with us. BB wants speed in his secondary. Although he has college experience at safety, I think Ventrone is a STer only and maybe a backup WR - if he sees the field on D we are in deep trouble. Don't know much about McGowan but hopefully he can stick as a real backup. However, Springs can definitely take reps at safety too and this might be a good way to get all our young corners some PT.

Re: Chung in Spann gone...a BIT of a surprise..but....

Not the least bit surprised by this...didn't think Spann was going to make the squad and at least gives him the chance to catch on elsewhere.

Heaven forbid the worst happens and they need a body for the secondary, any chance we see him again later on in the year if he's still available?

:(

Spann was my binky.

I loved his attitude. Of the few present-era Patriots I've ever met, he was the one I liked best by far.

That pitter-pat you hear is Jamar Love's tears.

OK, he's a long shot at best, but he's a six footer with super-elite speed and quickness. A little more intriguing than the typical camp fodder.

Re: Chung in Spann gone...a BIT of a surprise..but....

Spann was probably the slowest secondary player of the Belichick era (Yes, I'm including O-T-I-S and, no, I'm not including John Lynch or other "big nickel" guys). Good riddance.

For a second there I thought it said Chung and Spann gone.

Scared the piss outta me.
