The Globe has learned that rookie safety Patrick Chung, the Patriots' top overall selection in the 2009 draft, is with the team in Foxborough today on the team's rookie reporting date.

Chung's reporting to training camp today means that he and the Patriots have be able to agree to terms on a contract.

The 5-foot, 11-inch, 212-pound Chung was the first of the Patriots' four second-round picks, taken No. 34 overall. That was the pick the Patriots obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel and outside linebacker Mike Vrabel.

The team's veteran reporting date is Wednesday, with the first full-squad practices set for Thursday.

I guess that the Pats will report his signing later.

Fantastic News... Let Training Camp Begin.

Good news all of the rookies are in camp.. Bill cannot say, "I can only comment on the players in camp."

Fear not. He will find another way to dodge any question he doesn't want to answer.

Q: How is (Player's name) doing in camp so far- do you like what you see?

BB: all of our players are learning the system, getting better, day by day. They're all trying hard, but there's a long way to go until the first preseason game and the first regular season game... September, 10, 11th... whenever it is.

:)

Gawd, all the rookies are signed! What are the lazy sots in the press pool going to write about? They might have to actually watch practices. Oh, the horror.

Hmm, time to fall back on Plan B: write about the personal background and college history of the rookies. Lots of rookies; that should provide some nice filler and not force them to watch that practices.

Wrong! Jake Ingram and Tyrone McKenzie are not signed. I can

still complain how the Patriots want Ingram to take a portion of his

bonus in 2010 (he won't be here) and will short change McKenzie

because he was unlucky enough to get injured in mini-camp.

I doesn't make sense to pay a rookie long snapper a signing bonus. The guy is here for camp competition and is, best we know, a 50/50 proposition to make the roster. If you're going to pay two signing bonuses for one long snapper you might as well overpay for Lonnie Paxton.

i like all 3 of the top safeties we have but im confused as to y we drafted chung so high..bc all 3--meriweather, chung, and sanders are basically paid as like starting players??

BB was running 3 safeties in Nickel/Dime packages last season before Rodney went down - then they used more CBs. Chung will be brought along at a pace similar to Meriweather's, he should be getting more reps after mid-season.

HOw does Tank Williams fit into this, is he more of a hybrid LB??? Anyways nice to see the depth at this position...

When the Patriots DRAFTED Ingram with the 198th pick, they knew
exactly how much salary and bonus money he would be due. Frankly,
they did the player an injustice drafting him if they did not want to
pay him the going rate. Why didn't they just wait and sign an undrafted
free agent long snapper? Because Ingram was the highest rated LS.

I though that there would be a problem the day they drafted Ingram.
Lonnie Paxton's 2008 salary was the veteran's minimum of $730,000 plus
a $150,000 signing bonus and a $4200 workout bonus. They knew Ingram
was due the minimum salary for four years plus a bonus of about $100,000.
What the Patriots are trying to do is screw the player and his agent by
deferring part of the signing bonus until 2010. As you mentioned above,
Ingram has a 50/50 chance of making the team and ever collecting all of
the bonus money he is due.

Just curious where you get the 100,000 bonus from?

Seems to me there wouldn't be much precedent for a Drafted long snappers contract.

The $100,000 is simply a guess. Bod Rudd drafted 197th last year
got around $85,000.

I'm sure there have been very few long snappers drafted unless they
played another position like Steve DeOssie.

No, the precedent is for the draft position (which based on neighboring contracts rates approximately $97,000 in signing bonus money - close enough to $100k for messageboard work). The player and his agent are doing what's best for the kid, if NE wants a true Training Camp competition for LS, then they need to sign him, if they are content to pinch a few pennies and cede the job to Hodel, then the kid is between a rock and a hard place. If NE doesn't really want to spend the full $97k, then offer the kid a two or three year contract, if they think he's truly competitive for the job, then don't be penny wise and dollar foolish.
